HI, I'm a Newbie

I just hooked myself up with this:

did I do okay? I play piano, keyboard, guitar, and piddle around with a few other things. Oh yeah, and I sing. So I have quite a bit of stuff and decided I'm ready to throw down.....looking at this as a hobby right now, creative outlet. I'd like to find some good drum and other effects, what's the best route to take on that? I'm going to spend some time acquainting myself with the Owner's Manual before I ask too many questions (I've never recorded on my own before). Any advice you have for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

drum and other effects

I use a Zoom RT-123 with my setup. It's ok but I like live drums better. There are some good drummers that might be willing to put drum tracks to your recordings if you want to check 'em out in the MP3 mixing forum. I've never used drum loops but that could be an option??? Maybe? Maybe not.

As far as effects...I guess you could get a multi-effects processor or take your tracks to computer for EQ and effects. That is what I do but then again your setup is better than mine. I use the MR8. I transfer all my tracks to the PC where I mix, add EQ, effects and edit them. I've had my eye on that Fostex 16 track you bought. Seems like it is a real good bang for the buck. You look like Charlotte Church? I will be your teacher. Is your place a long drive from the UK? :eek:

Do tonnes of reading, be wary of bad advice and most of all - keep plugging away. Most of what you need to learn can be done with your ears. That snare drum doesn't sound right. Why not? What tools have I got that can change that, both before and after recording?

You will go a long way if you do things like that.

Nice setup.
I like the VF160 so much I have 2 of them.
I think it is one of the best all-in-one boxes made.

I do all my tracking on the fostex.
But I do most of my mixing on the computer.


You still can get some good sounding mixes on the VF but you can do a lot more on a computer.
 
I have the exact setup and love it. You'll need a light pipe to record all 16 at once but that shouldn't really be a problem until you start trying to record a live band with multiple drum mics etc. The Behringer ADA8000 works well. I run an external compressor, rockman 12 band eq (great eq by the way) and an SPX90 with mine. I do all of my drums with the Boss Dr770. Great initial mixs. I agree that final mixs and masters are better done externally. The manual is a little disorganized. Make a list of what you want to do, then highlight the sections and add color coded tabs to get where you want quickly. Noisedude is right. Your ears will be your ticket to learn. You get a feel for the internal effects and eq pretty quick if you experiment and listen. Congrats and good luck.

....y'all, appreciate the advice (and the congrats!) I thought adding effects externally was probably the way to go.....I actually got a cheap computer just for that reason, to download(upload) software, mix on. My little bro is a VERY good drummer, so I imagine I will be hitting him up for this or that, or potentially exchanging access to the equipment to someone willing to drum for me in my city.....who knows, we'll take it as it comes. Thanks again for the advice, as soon as I figure out what the hell I'm doing (or figure out that I don't know what the hell I'm doing ;) ) I'll be back for more (and reading here in the meantime). lol.
