I am using a korg D12 recorder with onboard cd burner.
To get it to cd I must first bounce all my tracks to two tracks. This is where I get confused:for good stereo quality should I be panning the two tracks "left and right"as they go to cd?...also should I be panning left and right with all the tracks as they become two tracks?...I have been leaving all my knobs to the center....any help I would really appreciate!

OK, this could depend on what instruments are on what tracks, etc., but as a ROUGH guide................Kik and snare centre, o/heads panned L&R respectively, toms somewhere in between........imagine looking at a kit and where the individual sound originate. Bass, centre. Guitars panned to taste, but maybe only out to the 2 o'clock position. Lead Vox, centre. Backing vox, similar to guitars.

I repeat this is only a guide to help start your mixdown to the final stereo tracks which I would definitely pan L&R.

Judicious use of reverb on snare, lead vocals, etc., and careful use of EQ can help create space in the mix and also help give each instrument it's place.

Different people will have different ways of approaching this, so be prepared to find which way works best for you.

I read GothGirl's question differently. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Assuming you're talking about burning your already-mixed 2-track mixdown to CD (keep in mind, I'm not familiar with your equipment), you WILL want to pan hard left and hard right to retain the stereo image of your mixdown. It seems kind-of odd that you'd even have to specify that when burning a CD, but I suppose they'd have the option in there in case you wanted to burn a mono CD for testing on different systems.

The question IS confusing... possibly because of the apparent incorrect use of the term "mixdown".

Mixdown refers to the blending of your multitrack recordings into a (typically) 2-track stereo recording...

In case that is what you're asking, here's an article that may help...

If that ISN'T what you're asking, then you'll have to elaborate further...!

great resources Bruce!! Easy reading, well thought out. Invaluable. Thank you.

OK, I read the post to be two questions, one regarding panning of the final stereo mix, the other dealing with the panning of individual tracks during initial mixdown.............consequently, I answered in the order that the process takes place. :)

You do your panning while you're bouncing your individual tracks down to your stereo track. The stereo track pan ( that you're bouncing to ) should be straight up, in the middle. If you're bouncing to paired tracks, the left pan knob will be the only one active; it should be straight up, in the middle. When you play your stereo track back to record to CD the pan should be in the middle - the panning has already been done and recorded to the stereo track.

Hmmm... which captures the sounds of demon spirits better - an SM57 or a Neumann U87? :p

I'm one of those dippy creepy Christians. :D Glad if I could be of some help. I have a Korg D8 and am thinking of going to the D1600 pretty soon. The Korgs are really nice little machines.

I know last time I recorded demons, I had to use a Beyer M160 -- they were awfully screechy and the M160's "warmth" toned-it-down a notch!

Hey,Thanks for all the replies guys!.You even got a chuckle out of me...he he.
actually me and "them" use a Sennheiser 865.
Seriously now ,I really do appreciate your help,it has not been that easy for me to try my hand at engineering my own album .
If you have any suggestions on how I could do the tech part a little better, please tell me.Thank you again.(GothGirl)

Since you helped her it looks like you're going to hell. :D

You guys have some cool stuff but you need to use a higher MP3 quality so it doesn't ruin the sound so badly. 128kbs is minimum with 192kbs preferred. You are using 32kbs.

Actually... maybe demons WANT it that way - inflicts more pain on the ears! :p ;) :D
