Hey guys, im new and bought new pieces of equipment for my band lately:
Tascam US-1641 Audio Ínterface
2x AKG Perception 170
Rode NT-1A

We want to get our first bits of recording done, but we have problems setting up the interface.
I do get audio on Cubase, it displays it in the green bar or how to call it, when i make noise it goes up, you know what i mean :)
But when i play it, i dont hear anything, neither if i export it to a .wav or whatever file. The file is some megabytes big always, but when i try to listen to it, theres no audio - displaying it in Audacity doesnt show audio aswell, and i tried listening when i just used PC speakers aswell.

First installed drivers for the Tascam, then Cubase 5 LE.
My OS is by the way Vista 32bit, running on a laptop.

So, what i currently have set up is the AKG Perception mics in XLR 1+2 with phantom power on and a dynamic micropone in XLR 5 (phantom power is supplied to 1-4 or 5-8).
Then i have headphones plugged into Line Out 1 on the back of the interface.

In Cubase i have of course selected the Tascam drivers.

In VST Connections i have Line Out 1 + 2 set as stereo output, but aswell tried 1 as mono because of my headphones (which is obv. only 1 cable)
Inputs are 1+2 Stereo for the AKGs and 5 Mono for the dynamic mic.
I tried all mono aswell.

It did work at the first try i did in total (only by exporting, with standard settings), but then, because the sound wasnt as good as i wanted it, i set it up after the guides there is.

So to conclude, Cubase receives audio - cant export/play/whatever it though.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Have you updated to the most recent drivers?

Have you armed the tracks you wanna record, and selected/deselected monitoring in the track? At your track they appear as a bigger round red button with a black dot in it (to arm track) and a smaller brown button (to activate monitoring). I think the monitoring should be on during recording or whenever you wanna hear the input, and off during playback.

Hope it helps.

I have a Tascam US-1641 audio interface that I use to record on my Macbook with Logic. When I first set everything up I had an issue getting the correct drivers so I called Tascam customer service. After a long hold I was told to install the previous "large" update to the drivers (the jump from 1.8 to 2.0, not 2.2 that was current) and install the drivers sequentially up to the most current. That fixed my issue, might be the same for you, try giving them a call...

Also, there's a headphone jack on the front of the US-1641, on the right-side corner (knob side). I've never plugged headphones in the back. In Logic, I can set the sound output device to "US-1641" so all my recorded sound plays through the US-1641. Not sure how Cubebase works.

One more thing, you can use a dynamic mic with the phantom power on. It won't harm the microphone.

Good luck.

I do have record and monitor enabled.
and i also got drivers 2.0 which according to the tascam page is recent.
Any more ideas?

Did you plug your headphones in the front headphone jack? There are 3 knobs on the right: one to control the monitor volume, one for the headphones volume, and another labeled Mix. The mix knob adjusts where the sound will come from, either straight through the US-1641, or straight from the computer via usb. Try turning the knob all the way in either direction with the volume knobs turned up, see if you can hear any output. Other than that, try calling customer service, they are there to help and might quickly settle your frustrations.
