Hey, Muttley!

Finally! Zaph, that's a sweet ass guitar. The new limited run Gibbo with the neck P90 is also making me drool.

He's gone? Phew, I feel like we can finally go back to talking about guitars.

No joke, Drew. What a pest.

If he decides to come back after 6 months I'm sure we'll have to run him off again.

I think marioantigod is his colombian cousin or somethin

So Sluttley... How does it feel to have Hickory Meat banned on a thread with your name on it? :D

Zaph,

I used to own one of the originals in the early '70s. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I'd like your comment on a new Gibson Custom Shop release, particularly the bridge. It's the Les Paul Tribute 1952 reissue, and the bridge is (allegedly) faithful to the original bridge patent.

Link at Gisbon: http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Tribute-1952.aspx

From what I can gather the bridge floats on the top of the body and is only anchored at the bottom of the body. (The description online says, in part, "The guitar’s resonance also benefits from not having any bridge or stopbar holes.")

Whaddaya think?

It's the original bridge, but, as far as I know, not fitted in the original way. Here's how they did it first (I think):

Apparently, Les Paul hated it becuase he couldn't palm mute on it. To the best of my knowledge, they fixed it within a year.

That reissue looks sweet, Zaphod. Too rich for my blood, but damn nice.

Oh, and Muttley, very elegant bridge/tailpiece.

Thats pretty much right. Those early ones where much lighter than the newer ones as well. According to the Gibson blurb in the brochures I have here the thing about Les Paul wanting a bridge he could palm mute is correct as well. I think I read it some where on their website as well?

How you doing anyway. Hope you had a godd festive season and enjoying the New Year. You getting this snow over in Eire?

That tailpiece is the same as the one I had. Mine had the strings strung over the bar. It was uncomfortable to play. The bridge pickup was weak and thin sounding. The neck pickup was terrific. Mine tipped the scales at over 9 lbs. The later '54s and '55s had better tone and sustain. There was nothing "woody" about the sound of mine. I had it about 8 months before it was stolen. They were going for almost $2k at the time on Gruhn's list. That was a very cool historic novelty, but not a great guitar.

Doing well. Just started a new job, so I've been really busy. Plenty of snow here, too (minus 10 last night), although you guys undoubtely have it worse.

Christmas was good. Hope it was good for you and yours also?

Happy new year!

If a les paul has the wrap around stop tail piece...and it's attatched to the top of the guitar...how do you set the intonation?

I have always wondered about that.

Two set screws on the side of the stop bar adjust the string length. There is no adjustment for individual strings. This works better than you might think.

It works perfectly well with standard setups and gauges. The problems creep in when you have to deal with unusual gauge string combination or setups. The wrap around bridge is still widely used by prs and others today.

It is no different from other types of bridge such as acoustic or archtop if you think about it.

He's back.
lol .............. I just saw that.

sigh ..... with muttley gone who's gonna warn the newbies?

I don't feel particularly evangelistic about it and yet ..... in the past he has suggested some pretty dumb stuff.
