Hey moskus...

I'm pretty sure I can get a better performance. Heck, I didn't even know all the words yet when I did that one. Any shot I had at getting to one before New Years has been shot to hell. I'm afraid I've come down with a bug. I'm hoping it isn't the flu :( . I would have had to do it this week because we are going home for Christmas and leaving Friday night. We won't be back until 12/30 and I'm sure there is no way in heck I'm getting any recording time until things settle in for a few days. . So keeping that in mind if everyone is happy with this vocal, we can call it a keeper. I just know I can do a better one ;).

I can always do one later that people can use or not use in their mixes as they desired (as long as Mike updates his mix with it ;) :D). If that works for you guys let me know and I'll get a wav of the vocal in the mail to Mike before I leave on vacation.

Of course, I haven't downloaded all the tracks yet. I'll have to do that when I get a chance so I can play with mixing it too.

John, why don't we see what the Clinic has to say about it? I am curious myself.

Can you host this on your site? If so, let me know the URL and I'll put post in the clinic (or you can do it if you wish). What do you think?

Yeah!!

I'll put it up on my URL. Should be able to get it up by this afternoon.

I think you had better post the thread, I haven't been around there for awhile. Been to busy to give a lot of good listens to anyone. :(

I'll shoot you the URL in a little bit.

Great! Now, let's all sit back and watch the great reviews roll in! :)

I ever heard this guitar somewhere before. It's realy great guitar indeed. Kind of "born to be recorded" guitar :)
Hey, I remember Jagular got some new fantastic acoustic guitars while ago. Got anything done with these babies, Jag?

Then let it roll forever, man... :D

Happy holidays, fella :)

Hey Moskus - Did you guys get to see the World Pop Idol show over in Norway? They had the winners from each country compete against each other (11 countries in all) and the Norwegian guy won.

Some guy named Kurt something. He was pretty good and I thought he deserved to win.

He competed against Kelly Clarkson, the winner of the first American Idol show. I would have preferred to see him compete agains the guy who won the second year. It would have been a pretty good contest.

Yeah...I got a Martin HD-35 with an LR Baggs Dual Source as an early Christmas present from my in-laws. It was very generous of them and kind of choked me up because they thought enough of what I am doing to give me such a nice gift. And yeah....I LOVE the sound of this thing :D.

You can hear some first attempts at recording it at

Where The River Flows
What Would Jesus Do?
Sins Of My Father

I recorded all three of those songs using the DI from the Dual source panned about 40% to one side and also mic'd with my AKG C 535 EB panned 40% the other way. Actually came up with a pretty good sound that way. The DI actually sounds really damn good all by itself :D. I like that pickup system a lot.

Since I got a stereo pair of MXL 603s's for Christmas, I will be playing with micing my baby with those in the near future. Can't wait to hear what that sounds like :D

Kurt Nilsen! If anybody should win, I'm glad it was the most normal guy who won.

But seriously. They're all loosers! :D

Thats Great!
John, I think you will like the 603's a lot better than the DI. The Di is thin and lifeless compared to a good micing ,, even to my deaf ears. It will take a lot of experimentation to get the mic placement right but its well worth it. Your playing is much more precise than mine, I think, but I really struggled with string and fret noise coming through when using the 603's at first. As my Texas neighbor and fellow homerecording member Harvey Gerst says, "distance is your friend" as far as that noise goes. I was trying to get the full bodied sound of my Yairi by micing closely and I found that I just had to compromise.
The best thing I have is a Roland MMP-2 mic modeler which is selling New on ebay for a little over $125. That really helps ALL those mic problems.
There is a song I posted on nowhere as (kind of a joke) which was called Led zeppelin reggae style, But during the hour or less I spent recording it I got my first nice acoustic sound through the 603 and the mic modeler. Give it a listen if you get a chance but only pay attention to the acoustic guitar sound. Theres a solo at the 1:58 which I especially like the tone of. I used the 603's at about 2 feet distance one aimed straight at the fourteenth fret and one below the soundhole at a 45 degree angle.

Hi Bill!!!

Yeah…lucky dog, that’s me :D

I’ll check that out when I get a chance. Can’t download here at work

I think I am going to like these mics. I’ve recorded my guitar in two different configurations so far with pretty reasonable results. First I tried an x-y config about 8 inches from the 12th fret. That sounded pretty good. A real tight stereo pattern and reasonably full sound. Maybe missing a little sparkle on top. But certainly a useable sound.

Last night I tried one pointed at the 12th fret and one pointed at the top just behind the bridge and both about 10-12 inches out. This gave a wider stereo image, maybe a bit more sparkle on top and a little less bottom. This would probably sit better in a mix. I paid attention to the 3 to 1 rule and this sound actually translated well down to mono as well. Sounded pretty darn good.

Before I take the mics out any further than 10-12 inches I need to bury my computer in the closet to get rid of the fan noise. To get the gain I need the noise floor is sitting at about -60 db, maybe a little more. That’s getting kind of noisy. It’s especially noticeable as the guitar rings out at the end and heads toward that noise floor.

Yeah…I’ve got a lot of experimentation to do on mic placement yet.

I also tried one of the 603’s on my vocal last night. It actually sounded pretty darn good!!! I was a bit surprised. I may have to play with that a little more too :D

And…ermm…..yeah…my guitar playing has never been described as accurate :D

Good to see you!!!

Hello oooo, Test Test, I thought my account was broken :) or am I in an episode of the twilight zone and everyone else is gone !!!

Hey Bill!!!

Got to check out that reggae zeppelin tune. HEHE...I was laughing all the way through it. But yeah the guitar sounded darn good in there. I'll have to experiment with backing the mics off a bit. I've been close micing. I'll have to bury my computer in the closet before I do that though. Otherwise at 2 ft you'll hear just as much fan noise as guitar :D
