Now wtf do I do with it? I found it in my mom's garage. It was in a box with a bunch of reels of tape. I vaguely remember my dad listening to this thing about a hundred years ago. What is it? Is it worth anything?

"Hey analoggers"....I had to do a double take....it looked like "Hey anal loggers".

It's probably a 3 3/4 & 7.5 ips deck.

Would be cool for some tape slap-back echo....or just as a tape "effect", giving stuff a vintage/lo-fi vibe...or doing some weird reverse tape effects....
...all depends on how good it still runs and how the electronics are.

Put a reel of tape on it and give it a spin.

I don't have anything to connect it to. Unless I can connect it to a Firepod in some way. :laughings:

It's a Sony TC250. I had one of them for years . . . about 100 years ago. It was my first burst in to recording.

Okay, so what do I need to operate this thing? say I wanna record some guitars to tape and dump it into the DAW. How?

I have a TC645 which is kinda similar. It's got line in and line out phono connectors; Yours might be the same.

Your firepod has jack line ins and outs so you could hook the two up no problem if the phonos are there.

For input, two dynamic mics straight into the front with ts or trs - xlr cables.

Yeah it's got phono jacks on the sides.

Sweet. If you track guitars to it then on into the daw in real time, you'll have to manually line up your guitar tracks afterwards.

The distance between record and playback heads on the tape machine introduces a delay.

Well that's doable. I'm guessing this thing has rudimentary preamps in it, huh?

Most likely. I've never used the mic pres in mine.

Just realised the firepod has direct outs for preamp one and two, so you could go

amp - >mics-> firepod xlr 1+2 -> direct out to tape - > line out from tape to firepod 3+4.

Sweet. I think I can do that. Thanks.

Wait, can you go from phono to a 1/4 line in? I think the reel-to-reel only has phono outs.

No probs Greg.

Yeah, the phono is just unbalanced line level audio, same as a TS Jack.
Just keep the cables short and it'll be fine.

Okay, but is there an adapter or something? I've never seen a cable with a phono plug on one side and a 1/4" jack on the other.

Cool, thanks!

This thing has been sitting for decades. I guess I gotta clean it up. What do I clean the heads with?

Lint free cloth and Isopropyl alcohol.
It'd be worth doing the whole tape path. Any metal part of the machine that the tape touches.

Not sure about the pinch roller. Probably just dry wipe it or something.
