I have a Pod that is pretty cool for recording direct, but it's off being repaired (bad fx switch)....Sitting here without the pod, I've been thinking of going a different route for my home recordings....I would like to get a single 12" guitar speaker cabinet and then stick it in this small closet which is pretty much dead sounding with all the clothes and junk in there lol , and mic it up with the sm-57 I have,..and maybe get one other mic and blend the two different sounds at my mixer. I've got a 16 space rack that's barely full, and there are alot of rackmount tube preamps to try, that aren't to expensive (maybe get several older ones). That would leave the power amp choice...So, what are some good choices for this scenario? I AM fairly happy with the Pod, but I KNOW that live micing will sound better, especially on getting a stronger, fatter high end. Obviously , stuff would be bought one at a time , over time as I could find stuff and afford it... Any suggestions for preamp, power amp and speaker choice would be welcome ! Thanks

Tech 21 make a powered sreaker for guitar preamps and what not. Check that out definitly. It's just the amp, some EQ and a level knob and speaker all in one box. Would be perfect some some situations.

As I've been "at it" for years, I've got 2 vintage Vox AC30's, an Orange, Hiwatt and various Marshall hats.

But.......... A new amp has just been launched which absolutely blew my mind. Its a tube amp, with interchangeable tubes for different sounds, and has a hotplate build in, so you can use it as a direct amp or to drive another hat.
Its called the THD Univalve. You can look at the details at

i'm a guitarist and i also do homerecording, although i haven't recorded myself much playing guitar (i know that makes no sense). anyway, my stage rig is a mesa/boogie studio preamp through a mesa/boogie 20/20 power amp. its got a very distinct sound, and although a lot of people hate the mesa studio pre's and the mesa power amps - i think it sounds awesome! i dont really like the mesa/boogie triple rectifier "extreme crunch metal" sound. the setup that i have gives me less "conformist" tones (if you will) but gives me mesa quality.

basically what i'm saying is to check out what mesa has to offer for your application.

p.s. - i did try using my mesa studio pre directly to my board once and i hated the results! but once i ran it through the power amp and through my celestion equipped 4x12 - i sounded awesome with a '57 in front of it.
