I like to leave my pick ups wide open usually and roll off with the amp if need be (i dont play live much....mostly just record).

I realized recently that with the selector switch fully to the bridge position, the tone knobs do NOTHING.

Is this normal that the knobs only control the neck and middle pick up.
I have a guitar wiring book and it doesnt mention that the tones shouldn't also adjust the bridge.....everything goes through the selector and therefore the tone controls dont they????

The guitar is a mexi strat.

thanks

Yes that's correct, normal Strat's don't have a tone control on the bridge pickup.....probably a cosmetic decision back when they designed it.
But there are tone controls for only the neck and middle.

On a stock Strat you have a tone each for the middle & neck pickups, and a master volume.

Here's a site that explains things pretty well, and also has some common wiring mods.

shouldnt you just be able to re-wire it and add another nob for it?

it makes sense :D

Dont have that problem on this American Strat in my hands right now.

ditto kramer

got a hot rails in th bridge and my tone works on it ....also american .....i think mine doesn't work on th middle but then again i never use th midd without one of th others in play ...also wired it where th neck plays with th bridge ,best sound of all th combinations, i don't know why fender doesn't offer this mod ....

Well when they put the hot rails in it; then they decided that the tone would work on that pickup, but as you've also said, it only works on two pick-ups. And you also said that you rewired it, so that hardly counts as a Fender wiring job. After all.....there are TWO tone knobs......period, except for a few special models.
I've probably seen and played on a couple of hundred strats, and with the exception of rewired Strats or special models with special features, I have never seen one that had tone controls for all 3 pick-ups. And, really. all of them I can think of left the bridge pickup without a tone control.

Thanks Lt.Bob and M.Brane.....

thats a very cool link.

Thanks for sharing the info even to us unpure mexi strat owners.

BTW Kramer, its not a problem per-se that the tone control doesnt change the sound of the bridge, just a late, why-didn't-I-notice-that-before kind of observation.

Also....how did you type your reply if you had your guitar in your hands???? Just curious.

no not really

they didn't wire it i did and all i did was put in place of the old fender it isn't even split ...and th way i did th front pickup was to add a switch where i could turn it off and on at will, th tone pots were never touched .....

It is considered uncool to change the number of knobs.
But, there are lots of ways to wire a strat, and
there are pots that have "pull" knobs that can be
wired to do lots of stuff, so you can use the three
knobs as three more switches, and have lots
and lots of controls -- all while keeping the
stock look.

Check out

for ideas.

I rewired mine when I installed my pickups. One tone control for it all. I should do the same with my Paul too...
