Most of the small monitors people use are called near fields. They are named for how they are used, as well as the design.

All sources (monitors, instruments, car horns) have a near field and a far field. The near field is where you hear more of the source than the environmental reflections, basically, or at least hear the source first.

The problem is that with big monitors, being in the near field often means being close enough that you can't accurately listen to all the drivers in the speaker. You can't hear everything. So you listen to big boxes in the far field, and spend lots of dough on acoustic treatment. If you were in a carpeted room the size of a warehouse, any monitors could be used as nearfields.

The same thing happens with instruments. In a crappy room micing an acoustic guitar, you may have to be in it's near field to get a good sound. But then you are probably too close to only use one mic.

So nearfield monitors are small, and the near field is full-range at very small distances. This lets you be in their near field in very small rooms with minimal treatment needed.
