Ive don a couple posts with similar questions already so i apologize for this one but I really need some specific help. Im trying to figure out how to treat my crappy room and have done a lot of research which has mostly confused me, do to the large number of options.
Below is a crappy diagram of my acoustically crappy room. Id prefer not to do any construction (might move in a couple of years) so am relying on acoustic products. the walls are dry-wall Note: the walls for the booth marked * are made from heavy packing blankets and are not soild walls.
I can get up to about $1500 to use if i sell off some equipment and currently have about 64 square feet of 2" foam and a pair of Mo-pads for my monitors.

Right now I am planning on doing something similar to the "acoustic 101 room" on Auralex's site here http://www.acoustics101.com/common/acoustics101room.pdf

Their room is similar in dimension but of course better designed and is only a control room. Going off of that I have 5 questions:

1) will this treatment plan work with my single room control/tracking setup?

2) I have seen many other places recommend absorption above the listening area where the "acoustic 101" room uses diffusers. Anybody have any preference towards either approach?

3) This room only has bass traps in the rear corners, are they not necessary in the corners behind the monitors?

4) How much coverage is necessary?

5) I know that thicker materials and space between the materials will absorb a more even frequency range. So im thinking that auralex foam isn't the best way to go. I could make my own panels, but im not the handiest person in the world so im thinking about buying panels instead if foam, any suggestions?

Thanks again everybody, your help is always greatly appreciated.

Check this out! , it should be heading in the right direction.

Good link. If i decide to build everything myself i will follow those directions. I have a couple of questions about that.
1) So the units are all free standing, with a gap between them and the walls correct?

2) What about ceiling treatment.

3) Stupid question: what are slats and what does varying the width do?

4) Since my ceilings are 8.5 ft it would be much tougher to make the panels that tall. could i get by with 8 ft panels and leave the 1/2 foot gap to the ceiling?

5) will this work if im tracking in the same room as well?

Yes, or you could just place them against the wall.

2) What about ceiling treatment.
For the ceiling you can make "clouds" out of wrapped 703 or mineralwool

3) Stupid question: what are slats and what does varying the width do?
The theory is that they are tuned to resonate at certain freq's to pull those freq's out. of the room.

4) Since my ceilings are 8.5 ft it would be much tougher to make the panels that tall. could i get by with 8 ft panels and leave the 1/2 foot gap to the ceiling?
That would be fine, easier to move around too when the time comes. If you planned it right you could utilze that are for more bass trapping

5) will this work if im tracking in the same room as well?
Yes, and if I were you, I would plan on just have one large room instead of all the tiny ones if you can manage it.

The difference is that slats keep the room "alive" most so than the other. Making it sound/feel better overall.

They would both get the job done.

That makes sense. Thanks again. I think im going to go ahead and make some panels on my own and use the foam I have to fill out the rest.

What about diffusion though? I have capeted floors so I could probably use a little more openess in the tracking area for drums etc. What do you think?

What kind of foam? Most foam is useless, especially if your going to make other panels.
The slats have a side benefit of diffusion. :) Other than that, you don't really need a dedicated diffuser for a room that small.

the 2" auralex. What if I just used it in the vocal booth? Good point on the slats as diffusors, are those types of panels considered resonators? Im trying to get all my terms straight. The slats are just wood right?

Well, I still am waiting to see your final design on the space. :) I'd prob be ok for a vocal room though. The main prob with Auralex foam is that it doesn't get very deep at all compared to the insul.

Helmholtz Resonator=Slat Resonator=SlotResonator
Yes they are wood/lumber

Its finally all becoming clear! Thanks so much VSpaceBoy, you just earned a rep point to ad to what seems to be a huge number of them.

Lol, i just realised that my little diagram on my first post didn't post right at all.
Here is a quick sketch (i hope i attached this right). Keep in mind that the dotted lines around the vocal booth are heavy packing blankets and not walls.

Hopefully my last question for this thread. My main concern with the setup is the lack of symetry do to the fact that the right wall is two different lengths. From my listening position the first reflections will be equal but behind me and in the tracking area they are not. Is this a big concern?
IF so can I remedy it without building a wall?
