Here is a rough draft mix. Can I get some feed back?

Yeah I'm not really rushing things. In the past I would get frustrated and call it done just to get it over with. This time I'm doing a little here and there to keep from getting burnt out. Learning new tricks as I go. I did record the guitar DI and even have a re-amp box, but I don't have a decent amp to record. I might end up re-amping and trying a few things with what I have. I will definitely go back and experiment with the guitars. Even just getting them a little better would be good, if that's possible lol.

You should have bought that Mesa I told you about last year. That amp will do these guitars in it's sleep. :D

Seriously though, instead of using a straight sim, use the sim for tone, and try to find a good speaker cab impulse. If you gotta do guitar direct ITB, use a cab impulse. They pretty much universally sound better than sim cabs. Hell, I've got a whole bunch of them, I'll give em to you. Do you know how to use convolution files?

I have no idea what that is, but I'm ready to learn. Youtube is our friend.

Here a pic of how I have a typical amp set up in Guitar Rig

cool stuff , deep guitars--- great! Vocals sounds good!
regards Leo

I quite like this style and this is a great effort. I am not at all well versed in mixing it, or what trends may be vogue for it, and I call it "cookie monster" singing, so I obviously don't know what I am talking about and you can take this as you see fit...

I would use something like the opening verse of Slipknot Psychosocial as a benchmark for the treatment and placement of the the vocal. Slipknot - Psychosocial [OFFICIAL VIDEO] - YouTube

The guitar for this style does seem to be a bit spongy, so I wouldn't worry about that. But since I am now comparing you to Psychosocial I would say that your song sounds a little laid back. I think both the guitar and vocal need to be a bit more intense and punctuated.

Slipknot is far from the genre of metal that I'm going for, but those guitars do sound pretty good. I get what you're saying. I agree that the vocals here aren't quite where they need to be just yet. Listen to the other track I posted in the mixing clinic, Holiday In Cambodia. It's much closer to what I'm going for with vocals.

Yeah:thumbs up:, but again on Psychosocial, it has a "pretty boy" vocal Chorus, which I think is a nice contrast.

I think you also need to find a juxtaposition with the "cookie monster" vocal, that could be entirely instrumental or in the mix, to help punctuate and contrast.

cool stuff! Deep deep Guitars i like it! the deep Vocals are great!
I am not able to do something like that at all, good Job!

I tried some cab impulses. Doesn't seem like anything I do makes it sound better. I think the source guitars just sound ratty. I'll keep trying. Any tutorials that you know of for getting better tones with impulses?

Only use the "head" in the sim. The cab impulses are a separate thing.

How do you add cab impulses?

:)

You need a convolution plug-in. It's just like using impulse reverbs. A cab impulse is basically the "thunk" of a speaker picked up by a mic. Like an impulse reverb, you're only getting the after effect of the speaker moving, not the sound that created the thunk. It's like capturing the invisible shockwave of the speaker moving air. This is then multiplied with the raw line-out signal from an amp, or you can stick it with a sim head with no cab. Naturally the results will depend on the quality of the impulse files themselves, but there are lots of good free ones out there. So insert your convolution plug right after your sim program - no cab - and you add whatever speaker/mic impulse you wanna use. Then adjust the wet/dry to taste. To me, this sounds better than a sim's cab because with the impulse file you're getting some essence of an actual speaker moving air because that's how it was made. It's like black art voodoo shit.

I have some really nice Greenback impulses with a huge variety of mic positions and mics. They're sitting around unused because I've got the real deal sitting right here next to me. If anyone wants them, just let me know.

Could you suggest a convolution plug-in for guitars?

I know man, but I am actually curious myself. :)

I don't know dude. Reaper has one built in. I use it for reverbs, but have only dabbled with it for cab impulses. It works like it should.

I'm sure there are piles of freebies out there. I don't know which one is good or not though. I would assume they all do the same thing, but again I don't know. I have heard really good things about the SIR Convolution plug.

Yeah I watched a youtube video that shows how to do it and downloaded a bunch of impulse files, but still getting a shitty guitar tone no matter which amp head or impulse I use. lol...

Send me those files maybe there will be something I can use in there.

Wait, I just looked at that pic you posted, is that what you're using? The "SLO-100" sim?

So what's up with the dimed treble and presence? And does that little bullseye on the speaker mark where the mic is supposed to be? I'm obviously not there with you, but that seems like a recipe for woofy fizz. Try something else. Swap some amp treble for a brighter/clearer mic placement.

It probably is a combination of noisy playing and shitty guitar lol. Yeah I moved all that shit around and that was the least sizzle spot. I'll try what you suggest, maybe it'll be better :D
