I have a younger female friend that has an older midi equipped Roland keyboard that has a very limited sound selection. I remember in my younger days that a keyboard player I jammed with had some doo hickey that ran from her midi that enabled her to play lots of different sounds. This chick doesn't have lots of scratch. So I told her I would poke around. Anyone know what she needs and how much it should cost?

what your friend needs is a multi timbral midi sound module.
the term multi timbral means able to play many different sounds at one time.
for example drums, keys, bass etc etc. look around on the used market for one. if your friend needs help on set up a very active midi user forum is the band in a box forum at pgmusic.com. your friend can learn a lot by asking questions there due to the expertise level and the in depth help given midi newbies.peace.

A sound module. Don't know what kind of budget you have, but Roland make some decent modules priced from around $550+ new. You could check out eBay and probably get a decent deal on a used one as well. What kind of sounds do you think she's looking for? Bread and butter type stuff (pianos, electric keys, etc)? She'd need a module and a couple midi cables, and she'd be set with new sounds.

You can probably find some helpful people around here in regards to midi too. If you have any other questions, throw them out there (or here). :)
