I like a lot recording my own stuff, but I'm afraid after some years I'm still kind of newbie.. you'll see: I record only vocals using karaoke CDs as playback and then I masterize vocal and finally mix with karaoke music.. I used to do it using a UB802 mixer directly to line in a laptop, however the clipping in loud vocals forced me to search for an alternative.. then I bought a Tascam US122 with better results in amplitude (not in sound quality, because I have to use several reverb effects to get the UB802 quality..) but clipping was still an issue, so I bought a small compressor Presonus COMP16.. better results however I don't know if I'm using the appropriate set up, as it doesn't seem to match what I have read about the setting of the COMP16 ("set IN button to minimum (-20 db), play and slowly turn it clockwise until the audio signal meters between 5-7 db, then manipulate OUT button to restore the compressed audio"). In the real world I have to set the IN button almost to the right limit (clockwise) and the OUT button less than 0 db in order to avoid clipping while recording.. What am I doing wrong?? everything??
on top of that I use the mixer AFTER the TASCAM to bring the karaoke music and the vocal from the TASCAM together to the headphones...
