i picked up a condener mic, the behringer B-2 pro. i hooked everything up and when i turn my 4track machine on, the mic has a loud hum, like it's 'presence' and i can't figure out how to turn the humming sound down without adjusting the volume which the mic takes in itself. if i turn the input level down, the humming goes away but so does the sound level - i record and nothing is heard. i'm not sure what to adjust so the humming goes away but the overall sound level, with which to record, remains.

I'm not familiar with the mic, but there are a few things you can check:

Remove the cord from the mic and make sure you're reading about 48 volts DC between pin 1 and 2, and also reading the same thing between pin 1 and 3. If that checks out ok, make sure you have the cardioid/omni switch set firmly in one position or the other. (And does it work in either position?).

Is the -10dB pad set to 0dB as it should be? Is the bass rolloff switch set to flat?

If all of the above things don't help, grab the body of the mic firmly while you try to move the top metal screen around, to see if the hum disappears for a moment. If it momentarily works, the screen is not properly grounded to the mic body. Probably some paint overspray is causing the problem, which is easily fixed with some sanding.

You are going XLR to XLR with phantom power turned on, right?

yea, it's xlg to xlg. mm, i don't have any idea what you said though. i need a tangible person to walk me through all this.

This may be a stupid question but does your four track have phantom power?

yea, i bought the separate adaptor for it. the mic works, the humming just won't go away.

I didn't read all of Harvey's post. Oops.

Do you have your mic near your computer monitor or have the mic lead near anything electrical?

i have it maybe two feet from my monitor, about a foot above the computer tower. i noticed when i moved the phantom pack away from the 4track the humming was not as prominent. i'd turned off the computer eariler when i was setting it up as i thought that was the source of the problem, though the humming did not detract at all. so no i don't think it's anything electrical. i really don't know

brand new cables
Your mic is brand new too, but you still have a problem somewhere in you hookup. Try using different cables. Bring your mic to the store and see if it hums with their system.
