Right now i'm trying to figure out what I should do about my lack of decent monitor speakers. I don't have too much money to spend, only around $300 +/- and I've been debating which pair of active monitors I should look into purchasing. I really like the Alesis M1 Active 520's, as well as the Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2's, but that's really the only ones that are in my price range and i'm aware of their quality. If anyone else has any ideas on any other active monitors in my price range, I'd like to hear from you. The room that I am mixing in is my 8' x 12' bedroom with a bit of room ambience (not too dead of a room). I really would like to purchase a pair soon only because I've got a few projects that I've been waiting to take care of, and my new audio class is starting up jan 16th. Thanks ahead for any help you guys can give.

I recently auditioned about 8 different monitors and I was prepared to spend around US$1800. I was leaning towards the Mackie 624's when I came accross a pair of Fostex PM0.5's. I auditioned these against Dynaudio's BM6a, Tannoy Reveals'. and a whole lot more. In the end I went home with the Fostex monitors for US$400 because they reproduced all my reference material better than all the other monitors except the Dynaudio's.

2 years later I'm still very happy with them. They translate very well for most types of music, except where plenty of bottom end is needed. I have a sub setup that I switch on if I need to. Fostex also make a PM1 which is bigger and is more of a midfield speaker. They sound splendid but a little hyped.

Google them and you'll find plenty of good reviews. They are supurb for a small room.

All the best!

Hey Wunder, thank you so much for the help man. I actually think i'm going to either get the fostex pm0.5's or the pm1, i'm just not sure which is more appropriate for me. Right now musicians friend is having a sale on the pm1 for only $300 (normally $400) and the pm0.5 is $300 normally. I think I'd be getting a deal if i went with the pm1 since they usually cost more and I can get them for the same price as the cheaper model. Judging by my room and what i've said earlier, what do you think I should go with? Remember these are going to basically be my main mixing speakers, and I'll have to use for the majority of my work. I hope to hear from you soon with your recommendations, thanks again wunder.

I use a pair of crappy diecast RCA speakers from Radio Shack...lol. They are hooked to a nice Yamaha studio power amp. I added an alarm to them for bad mixes. I had a pair of cheap Sony head phones next to the speakers one day and noticed with real CD's there was no noise. But when I played one of my horrible mixes, there was a nasty midrange resonance between the head phones and speakers. After playing around a bit, I used the headphone drivers for tweeters. When the noise clears up, I have a mix that won't kill someone...lol.
