I'm recording with my drummer tomorrow and would just like some help/advice. Ive recorded before but always with less gear and stuff. This weekend ive got 5 dynamic mics (two which are sm 58s the rest are cheapo ones) and to condenser mics (both are pretty cheap don't really know the brand). Ive also got a kick mic which im pretty sure is a shure. Any help with mic placement, eq and compression would be greatly appreciated. also i only have to channels i can mix these mics down into so which mics should go on each channel. i was thinking of just putting the kick by itself on one of the channel.

I absolutely agree with all you have said.

What's the size of the kit and are you using a mixer?

What are the room acoustics like? If it's a good room you could just use overheads.

I would suggest putting the kick mic on the kick (duh) and then your best dynamic on the snare (one on the bottom might be good too). Then put the condensers as overheads and see how it sounds. I find a setup like this works really well. The only trick with two tracks is that you have to make sure that all of your tracks are mixed prior to recording. You will want some compression on the snare and kick, but try to keep the rest of the kit pretty natural, except for maybe a little eq to either tame or boost the cymbals (whatever it needs, and it may not need anything).

I've had to use this kind of setup before and I've had some pretty good results. What I done was use 2 overheads, bass mic, and a snare mic. I put the 2 overheads to one channel and the bass and snare mic to the other. But like everyone said, make sure the levels are pretty good and make sure the drums sound good before they're ever recorded. Especially since you have such limited recording abilities. Also, like other people said, I'd use the two condensers for overheads, a 58 for the snare, since that's you're best dynamic and of course the bass mic for the bass. But yeah, just do all that stuff and I'm sure you'll get a pretty decent result.
