I'm using a Carvin 8 Channel Mixer which can record up to 2 tracks at a time using a direct USB link to my computer. However, it seems like the mixer generates a hiss even when the record volume is 0 on the back of the mixer.

Can anyone help me fix this? or should I just buy new gear?

That sounds like a power problem..look into uhh shit forgot what its called but basically its a fancy expensive power strip...double check your basic connections too and keep your cell phone far from your gear 1/4 inch jacks and cords always get hisses if they`re old

I'm not so sure it's power or a mobile - they tend to be more the cause of hum or buzz than hiss. Are you sure you know your way round that desk real well? I'd start by checking that the usb audio device is the default audio input device in the PC - any other option such as 'Windows Mixer' can add noise from other unmuted inputs. Then I'd set every gain and fader on the desk to zero, including any aux returns, sub-groups etc. Power off all outboard and disconnect all non-essential leads. If you still have hiss, then I'm out of ideas! Otherwise, bring up only the gains vital for recording, one by one, whilst listening for the hiss. With luck, you'll have gotten rid of it, or will at least find out more about the source.
