Hello!

I'm new here, was hoping to get some advice on recording a choir and how best to use and place the gear I have for the best results. Looking through other threads there seems to be a fair few options!

So the choir is 40 piece. The music is contemporary classical and its just voices (no other instruments). Venue is a (hopefully) quiet church.

Gear I have to hand:

Laptop running cubase 5
Focusrite Saffire pro 26 i/o (8 channels of preamps)
1 x Rode NT2000
2 x KSM44
1 x SE X1

I also have a budget of around £100 to hire in other mics - can probably get 3 C414's.

So my initial thoughts were to try a decca tree with the Rode and Sure's / or with 3 x C414's. I've also then read that you might need outriggers at the far edges with the decca tree to ensure you get the outer singers, so could use a couple of C414's for that... also then read that you can try a midside with omni outriggers... very quickly gets confusing!

So, if anyone could offer advice on how best to place my gear that would be most appreciated! If you could also be really specific on distances and settings (Omni / cardioid etc) that would be amazing - i'm pretty new to it all.

If it helps the positioning of the choir can also be changed - was guessing that having them make a tight ish semi circle would be useful vs 2 straight lines?

Cheers!!

If you can get the 414's definitely do that. But the greatest thing you can do that will either Make it or break it for you is PHASE. so make sure everything is in phase and it will sound good for you. And keep in mind before you go for any type of EQ, mess around with the placement of the mics!
