ive been using fruity loops to program drum tracks just for demo ideas but im having a problem with one thing. Alot of my songs go in and out of different time signatures, is it possible to have a song made up of patterns in different time signatures with fruity loops? The only setting i can find is for the overall song. So i can't go back and forth between 3s and 4s if that makes sense, or can you only program in one timing for the whole song?

I think there is a way. Why not just program the beats, just because there is 4 beats is a row, you dont have to make them 1234. Why not program it 1231, then the next measure 2312, then 3123. Then in 3 measures of 4/4 you have 4 measures of 3/4. Makes sense??

I'm interested in this too... I'm learning to work with fruity loops on short term. (Gotta have about an hour done next week  )

I'm using different time signatures all the time. 5/4 and other stuff. Starting from version 4 you can change the number of steps of the step sequencer, but I dunno about interchanging in between two different measures. But I'll let you know if I find out...

For now, my only hope is making the beats in fruityloops, and them compiling the entire song in another program.

what your saying works but can get confusing when you get alot of parts going and switching back and forth between different signatures.
thanks roel, if you find out how to swap please let me know. What program are you compiling the entire song in? That sounds like it might be an idea.

Yea you can do it pretty easy. This is from memory so I could be wrong, I'll check tonight when I get home.

Using two unused patterns, label one of the patterns 100 and the other 120. In pattern mode select the 100 pattern, right click on the tempo and in the edit events dialog change the tempo to 100 for the WHOLE PATTERN. (in the upper left hand corner of the FL display the will be a number that tell you the tempo). Do the same thing for the 120 pattern except make the tempo 120. Now just paint the pattern in the song where you want the temo to change.

If this doesn't make any sense just holler and I'll try to make a better explanation.

I think he is more interested in changing time signature, not the tempo. I know its confusing, but make yourself a map ahead of time. Label each track as either 4/4 or 3/4.

yes im definantly more interested

in changing the time signatures. I don't really want to move the tempo around.
J blount ill give your method a go, it still seems a little time consuming but it may work for the moment.

I know the problem. Maybe this could be an idea:
Each pattern represents a beat (=actually, for instance, a 2/4 measure). 4 patterns then are a 4/4, 3 patterns are a 3/4. Off course you have to adjust the tempo.
Might just be a little labor-intensive....

Here's the only way I see to get it working; if you want to change the time signature during the piece, you'll have to do it in blocks. So if your piece is in 4/4, and you want part of it to be in 3/4, make patterns that have a length of 4 measures. 4 measures of 3/4 equals 12 beats, which is 3 measures of 4/4.

So, you just make longer patterns (which is possible in FL Studio4! Don't know about the previous versions...), with more measures in your pattern.

If you're using an older version, that doesn't allow you to make these blocks, you can make 3 patterns, that are used in consequent order, representing a block of 4 3/4 measures... A rather complicated workaround, but the only way I see it to be done...

Wow if you guys would read the posts, I already explained that like 2 weeks ago. But yes, I think that is the only way to program something in fruity loops other than in 4/4.

I read that... 2 weeks ago...

But it's not exactly the same as making one long pattern... Instead of making 3 different blocks 1231, 2312, 3123 you can just make one pattern going 123123123123... ALOT easier to program your song with these...

But that's not the point. It is possible to set a measure of 3/4 in FL. The point is wether it is possible to have different measures in one song. For instance, three times a 4/4 and then a 5/4.

If this is on a regular base, making one long pattern of (4 times 4 and one of 5 =) 21 beats is an option. But if it's on a irregular base, handling one beat per pattern is the only way.

Now I understand your post... Strange, I'm about just as tired as I've been the last 2 weeks. Not THAT hard to get.

Indeed, if you use them in a irregular way, that would be the only way...
