Ive been recording my own stuff using sonar on my computer for about a year. I was wondering what is the best setup for recording bass lines. Ive tried a few different methods and nothing has come out how i wanted it to. I would like to know about mic placement, or other methods like direct boxes or anyhting else that you all use for recording bass. thanks.

i'm looking at a similar prospect, i'm thinking of some type of amp modeler, like the line 6 pod bass (i wish, its a bit too expensive for my pocket) or the zoom 505 for bass...and d.i.ing through one of these, any how, i hope this helps

I'm using Johnsson J-Station and I think it has pretty neat bass amp models in it. I'm also working by micing my bros H&K basscombo from the front with a single SM58 and by recording the line out of the amp at same time to a different channel.

I don't think these are the best ways to record bass sounds but when considering it to the gear I own I think it gives me more flexibility when I'm working with the mixes.

What kind of b.ass and recording gear do you already own?

Personally, I rarely mic bass any more but when I do I use either an AKG D-112 or a Groove Tubes AM-52 large diaphram condensor in omni up on the grill. A few other things that have worked well for me is a Hughs & Kettner B.A.T.T. all tube bass preamp or a Johnson J Station. If I'm looking for more growl I'll have the bass player do the track through his bass amp cranked up to a toasty level and take the direct out frfom the head. The guitar will "light up" and has that natural compression and sustain that guitars will only do when played in front of a cranked up amp and the direct out captures that pretty well and still keeps the good definition that the direct out gives. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Gidges favorites....

Johnson J-Station

CountrymanDI (if anyone wants to buy me one)

Since we've stumbled onto the J-station topic, how happy are you with the elec. guitar settings? I'm thinking of getting a J-station because of the bass/guitar flexibility but how does it compare?

I'm a big believer in both DI and mic'd bass cabs... a good mic on a good cab - David Eden, for example - sounds great. Natural compressor from the cone and depending on where you place the mic you can get nice round tones, or a punchy bright one, or even both!

Take a DI feed as well and then you can mix the 2 tracks together -- using the DI's clarity to help balance the "rounder" mic'd sound.

how does the J-Station compare to other amp modeling devices?...very well...all of them have their strengths and weaknesses....you really have to demo them to see which was has more usable sounds for you...the J-Station has better effects and is more flexible than a Pod....most off the presets suck a bit, so play with the settings and definitely listen to the models with no effects......

I use the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI. Easy to dial in a warm sound without any added noise.

I use my novation synth for bass.. i can't see what all the fuzz is about.. lower the filter, turn up the bass eq, throw the 2 first oscillators 2 octaves down and the second one 1.. how hard can it be... ehh.. oh... real bass.. sorry...
