Hey guys, first time posting, thanks for taking to time to help me out.

Okay, so I used the Presonus Audiobox USB 2x2 with an ART Tube MP project Series preamp in the past with pretty good results but wanted to take things to a new level.

So, I got the Audient id14 and Rode NT1A (terrible, harsh, clipped all the time, but I swapped out the capsule using microphone-parts.com and its much better). Since the Id14 is supposed to have great preamps built-in I stopped using the ART preamp. Initially, things were pretty good with instrument recording. Very clear but maybe a tad flat, a little lifeless. So, I decided to start using the ART preamp again. I put a new tube in it that people have recommended. Anyway, recording guitar and bass into the ART preamp and then to the id14 sounded warmer and better in my opinion. However, when it came time for vocals the only way a decent volume could be recorded was putting the gain of the id14 all the way up (static) or hitting the over gain button (+20db) on the ART preamp (distorted and harsh). The LED lights on the ART preamp don't light up unless the gain button is turned on and the signal into the iD14 is low also unless it is turned on.

I unplugged everything and tried the ART preamp into the old Audiobox and it sounded amazing. Way better than even before maybe because of the new tube. Gain and output on the preamp are a 12 o'clock and the audio box input is at 12o'clock as well. Can anyone tell why the audient iD14 will not work well with the ART preamp but it works great with the Audiobox? Any suggestions (besides buy a UA tube preamp)? The last three things I have bought from Sweetwater seem to have been terrible investments (Audient iD14, Rode NT1A, and EZmix2). Appreciate any help you can give.

Signal chain: Mic -xlr-xlr ART Tube MP Project Series Preamp - TRS 1/4" lineout - TRS 1/4" into Audient Id 14 2nd input "line"
I have tried all different combinations of phantom power and different inputs.

Thanks
Kevin

I think you are doing something wrong with the daw fuction of your recording program. Check out how beautifully my vocals are recorded without any effects and the volume of preamp to the half
