Help: Recording Live to Stereo

If you were to use the 424 as a multitracker, and you needed a good master recorder/CD burner later on, go for an Alesis Masterlink, as they both record CD's, duplicate CD's, and function as a hard disk recorder. It has XLR inputs, so no worries there. You could use it as a backup if your analog setup goes on the fritz. (haha. You'd think it would be the other way around, but this isn't the analog forum for no reason )

Right now retail is about $750 for those puppies, but there's always the 200 dollar discount possibility on ebay.

Yeah, I looked at the Masterlink, but after talking with someone who owns one, I decided this was like most of the other crop of digital stuff: just too menu intensive. There's a Tascam combination deck with cassette and CD I am still considering, but have to look the manual over first.

What is with the MXL 603s? I see those referenced all over the place. From the descriptions, I don't think I will like them. I have spent a lot of time carefully selecting my cymbals seeking out those that are darker and warmer sounding. Don't think I want to then spoil that by using a mic that is described as "bright." any other suggestions? I would love to get SM81s but they are out of my price range. Thought about the KSM109s. Also looked at the MXL 993s as a stereo pair, but suspect they will be like the 603s. And these are apparently only available at MF. Not an issue as I live near their warehouse and can pick them up on way home from work. Unfortunately, MF doesn't have the 424 MKIII,. I prefer MF as it makes returning stuff much easier.

If you dont think you will like the 603,s then you might look at the mxl v67
for the same price. They would do a good job and not be bright sounding. They have a more neutral sound. Or if you can find them at about 160.00 each the ATM33,s are nice plus they will run on a double A batteries so you would not need the phantom power supply

Yeah, the MXL mic stuff gets very confusing. I think most of the models sold by MF are their own models or something as most of these are not availble elsewhere. Made things pretty confusing. I am sure the 603 is a fine mic, and I likely would have went for that a few years back. But in recent times I have been getting ride of all the brighter, and higher pitched cymbals in favor of darker and warmer. Afraid my ears tire quickly on anything bright these days. that was one of my complaints on the Superscope PSD 300. Kind of hate to get ride of all that Paiste 2002 metal, but I just can't listen to them any more.

Hey thanks for all the great responses here. It has been very helpful.

I was wondering if you could go into more detail regards this rec live to four track at once. We are a blues band that rehearses in my garage. No, I have no clue if this is a good or bad sounding room. It's pretty dead. I have a couple of SM 57s and a pair of KSM 109s on loan. There are probably other mics in the possession of the other members, but I don't know that for sure. Thus far, I have done all rc with just the SM 57s as room mics. Not great, but not all that bad either. This is a hobby that I would like to devlop into something.

anyway, what kinds of tips would you have for a first timer at this proc.
