OP here. Yesterday I removed the strings and gave the guitar a closer once-over. I noticed the little retainer nut (or whatever you call it) that goes over the tuning post on the front face of the headstock was quite loose on the low-E string, which allowed the tuning post to be a lot more wobbly than usual. I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't notice that sooner, but maybe that was causing the problem?
Nonetheless, I'm definitely going to try strings that are one gauge heavier... I've been using these 9's for years and years out of habit just as much as anything else; maybe I've been missing out.
