I have a powerMac G5 and I am finally thinking about getting an interface so I can record 8 tracks of drums at once and do real recordings(instead of garageband)

does anyone know any good interfaces that would let me record 8 tracks of drums at once?
I am new to computer recording, so I need some help adapting.
thanks in advance

the G5 is a great start anyway, a digi 002 would be a great option that would give you 8 channels right off the bat and another 8 if you use the ADAT aswell, it has 4 pre amps so thats a good start, also i found pro-tools very user friendly and great all around also you shouldnt have any incompatability problems like you would with soundcards and stuff

thanks alot, I'll look into that.

wow, that's expensive, lol. I was looking at my local Guitar Center and they had a few aardvark q10's.
those would be perfect, but I am a little hesitent to buy because aardvark has seemed to drop off the face of the internet, meaning no customer support. the q10's were going for $549, which isn't bad for 8 ins and 8 outs. What else do I need? If I have an interface and software am I ready to go?

whats your mic situation like? the rack mount version of the digi 002 is alot cheaper, if you want to record 8 channels at once your gonna need another 4 pres (presuming the 002 is your choice)

I have a presonus firepod, works great and sounds excellent

I'm also very satisfied with my 002. It is a bit more expensive than other interfaces, but it gives you the great Pro Tools LE software.

I like my 002R too, and ProTools 6.7 is a very solid DAW. With the 002R you'll also be compatible with tons and tons of other studios.

ya but the biggest diffrence is the software, pro tools is very stable and from my experiance alot easier to use.

the big thing for me is price. I am still paying off my G5. So I'd like to stick with something around the $500-ish range, even if it means harder to use software.
thanks to everyone for all this info

What about that new MOTU Traveler interface, I think it is near your price range. MOTU stuff is really solid on the Mac.

digidesign mbox?

He needs 8 tracks for drums, so the Mbox wouldn't work. I'd avoid the Aardvark Q10 completely, they have gone out of business from what I understand.

yea, I haven't been able to find anything on aardvark online at all. so that's a no go.

How about a used MOTU 828? They change owners on ebay for <400 and from what I've heard MOTU interfaces work excellent with Macs.

what about the Terratec stuff? you can get a 'DMX 6fire Computer Recording System' for about 150 bucks + one of those Behringer digital 8 channel racks for another 100 bones.

RME multiface or Fireface. go and do a search about these one(u gonna find that nothing better than the hammer besides your computer clock :) ), i saw not much in these forum use RME, try www.rme-audio.com, but since u got a mac prolly u need to go with motu, RME is more for PC i think.

firepod

id buy two firepods they are great. i onoly have one , it has great clarity in the preamps.
