Help on warming/fattening up sound in Cubase

Hello all,

I have 2 MOTU 828 Firewire interfaces runiing into a computer sytem and I record into Cubase SX. I am contemplating the purchase of an analog reel to reel 16 track beacause I want a more vintage warm, fat sound. I'd like to record tracks onto the tape first, then dump the audio into the digital system for editing and mixdown.

Does anyone know if this is the best way to go, or can I get it done just them same by just going through tube preamps or using plug-ins instead?

Make sure you have plenty of horsepower if your throwing Magneto into the mix as it can really suck up the cpu cycles....

Magneto isn't really hogging my system (at least not like some Waves plugins) and sounds great to me :) But it doesn't make a thin thing fat, just a fat thing even fatter.
 
If you have CPU-usage issues you may want to try out a program called T-Racks from IK Multimedia - it's a standalone program that you load your completed mix into (I find it best to get the mix tonally correct & then treat mastering it as a separate discipline) & it contains a mastering EQ, compressor & multiband limiter (all analogue valve simulations) that can really add that fat kick to recordings - you can't adjust the frequency thresholds of the multiband unit but it still does a fine job - you can probably crank an extra 6-8db of RMS out of a mix.

There is also a plugin version but if your CPU is choking then the standalone version should suit you fine.
