That's one simple question?

That question is so loaded,... it has as many answers as "Carters has little pills".

The one simple answer to your one simple question, is you need to get the manual.;)

The 688 is a feature loaded multitrack, that almost none of the basic functions are intuitively easy to work. In brief, the LCD assign matrix display is the "electronic patchbay" section, where you'd set and view your channel-to-track assignments. Along with basic assign functions by pushing buttons, there are 99 "scene memories" that have prefab and user set assignment schemes already loaded, so you may change complex routing tasks with the push of 2 or 3 buttons. None of this is easily intuitive to beginners or experienced users, alike. You can bang through it on your own, and maybe eventually come to an understanding, but it really pays to have the manual on hand.

Tascam Parts sells manuals, at (323) 727-4840.;)
