okay lets start with what i have and my goals:

i have:
maudio mobilepre usb interface
cubase se
shure 57
cables

my goals:i want to record full bands consisting of drums,guitar,bass, vocals and key boards.

im not sure about the mobile pre...it only has 2 inputs and i would sell it for another if a good suggestion can tell me its a good idea. what would you do if you were me and wanted to begin a career in recording and wanted stuff for the house?

ps:i know music, i have been playing drums for 5 years and am familiar with audio equipment as well

If I were starting recording I'd buy lots of books on recording and use the search functions of lots of different recording forums.

first: win the lottery...

Seriously though, the whole "reading" thing will help you a bunch.
For your standard band, you're going to want about 16 tracks.

How you do that is totally up to you, and, more importantly, your budget.

For a basic "mix in the box" situation, I'd advise looking into some firewire/USB2 8+ch preamps/ADAs, like the Presonus Firepod, Digi002 (although that only has 4 pres), Mackie Onyx 1200F (when it's released) etc.

Basically, for each track you're going to want something like this:
Microphone->Preamp->outboard FX (not req'd*)->AD Converter->computer/software.

* I say not req'd, meaning that you can get away without outboard FX/Dynamics, but outboard stuff is usually considered better than plugins.

There's a bunch of threads around about which mics/pres/converters etc on this site, so that comes back ot the reading thing...
