Help Noob with 4+ track Vista Setup

Hello,

I need help getting a recording solution setup.

NEEDS:
-must record at least 4 tracks at once (6 would be better)
-Vista compatible
-cheaper is better
-I will use external preamps (unless there is resonably priced solution with good built-in pre's)

Please recommend a sound-card and budget monitors(Behringer?).

I plan to record digital drums, a couple guitar amp modelers, and vocals on it. All I have right now is a nice Vista computer and a Behringer 2 channel preamp.
Since I use Vista, I guess that limits me to the MOTU or RME? Although the E-MU 1616M looks nice.

Any ideas/suggestions much appreciated!

Sorry, when I've stopped laughing...
You'll have to do a fair bit of research into what is available AND has Vista drivers - new release stuff is likely BUT Vista isn't stable yet so you'll be taking a risk.
You'll need a fair bit of RAM to get around Vista's hunger for it AS WELL AS searching for someone who can tell you how to optimise Vista for audio.
 
I would suggest that maybe you should make your PC a Dual Boot system with XP on a Different Partition, so you don"t have to worry about Getting a Vista Compatible Interface/Driver/Software....It would save you a Lot of Problems in the Future ,at least till vista Becomes Stable and had more Support (Which could be years!!)

My M-Audio Mobile-Pre (USB) works perfectly fine with my Vista laptop, but it only allows for 2 tracks. The M-Audio Delta (PCI) series would have 4 or more, but it doesn't look like they have Vista drivers yet....I would guess that they would be coming soon as they keep adding more and more Vista drivers for their other interfaces.

Do you have Firewire? Because the PreSonus FIREPOD has Vista drivers, and is a great starting interface (has pre-amps too). If you don't have Firewire, and you have a desktop, it would be ridiculously cheap to add it...

Those are the cheapest solutions I can think of, there are other things that would be more money...

As far as monitors, I wouldn't buy Behringer...not because I'm a hater, but because in my experience their gear is not durable at all (it breaks eventually). If you are just looking for cheap, go for some cheaper M-Audio ones....if you want better, you could think about some KRK's maybe....

ps - do you 2 who responded even have Vista? Maybe I have the greatest version ever, but I don't have any issues....
 
Well i don"t personally have a Vista PC but I have changed enough customers Vista PC"s back to XP to know that for many things XP is just a better system ,at least for now.....

It is not really that the system is Bad it is the Lack of Support and drivers and compatible software/Hardware Pluss it is extremely resource hungry .....

I have 3Gb RAM so hopefully that will be enough. Otherwise I will have to setup my spare hard-drive with XP, which will be a pain to switch back and forth(for work).

That Presonus Firepod does look like it would suit my needs perfectly. Is a firewire connection really fast enough to record that many tracks at once?
