Help needed on Mixin & EQing a heavy metal song

Hi there,

I am a student doing my dip in SAE.I just recorded my final recording project. I recorded a Heavy metal band.I used 4 SM57s n two NT3 for over heads to record the drums.I used SM57s for electric guitars and bass.Just one SM 57 pionting at the front of the amp.And finally a vocal track recorded on a NT3.I am using ProTools to record and i recorded all tracks at 24bit/96khz.

I need help on how to mix and to EQ and also finally on how to master to get that overall sheen.I am not using any other plug-ins only protools version 6.9.

I hope you guys could help me out fast!! I am running out of time!!

man, i don't want to be rude but your doing your final recording project at one of the worlds biggest audio training schools and u have no idea how to mix a song? Thats pretty weird
 
I'm about to present my Doctoral dissertation on Theoretical Mathematics, and I'm not sure what an Integral is? Is it related to a Derivative? How do you measure the area under a curve if it's not like a square or something? What is a series? Who was Leibniz? HELP ME QUICK!!!!!!
 
Mix,EQ & SAE!

Dude its not that I dont know how to freaking mix a song! It's just that when it comes to heavy metal songs i am not that in tuned with.I posted here so that ppl would share thier ideas on eqin heavy metal songs share any tips n experince they have.

And one more thing they don't teach you everything in SAE dude..n to top it up SAE Singapore sucks!!! It sucks so much that i have to record in a studio which is not even acoustically done!!! But alas i have gotten a good recording.
 
Sorry, but if SAE didn't teach you that every mix is different and that there are no general recipes for using outboard processig gear based upon genre alone, then they took your money and took you for a ride.

Listen to a Heavy Metal CD that you like and compare........???? It really depends too much on how it sounds after tracking. There are no EQ'ing rules for heavy metal...no more so than any other genre.
 
Is this new black metal? Old Black Metal? Power Metal? Old school Metal? Grindcore? They all have different sounds in terms of EQ etc.

But the real answer is push the faders up and EQ to fix problems with the tracking. You should always try reach fro the EQ only when you need it, not as a matter of course.

If you are doing your final project at SAE, and indeed that have not walked you through this stuff and taught you how to do critical listening to make production decisions, you really should drag them over the coals for taking your money.
 
Aahhhh, I miss the good old days when "SAE" referred instead to a brand of quality top-shelf stereo gear...

You're a moron. Pay attention in class. You don't put 4 or 5 very very experienced professors together and not learn anything. On top of that, you have professors you could have asked this stuff weeks ago.
Sorry, but why record a metal band for your final project if you don't think you can work with it? Record something you know mate
 
Find a band that you would find comparable to the recording style... Use that as your reference mix. start with the drums then go to the guitars then bass then vocals but make sure you leave room in the mix for each one. but my advice is just listen to a song of similar style then listen to your song and figure out what you need to do to make it sound similar. plan out what you want to do with it then go in their and do it.
 
This is a hellarious thread so I had to subscribe. I got accepted to MI hollywood but Im not going if they wont teach me to mix.... :P
 
Mixdown for metal

Hang on, we're talking about heavy metal here. Where does mixing and EQ come into it? Just push all faders up to redline and press 'bounce to disk' ;)
It will sound the same as it will when the band play down the pub friday night, anyway.

On a more serious note, vcgeetar & metalhead28 had some good advice. Compare your mix to a band which sounds similar in style and work out where the instruments sit in their mix.
(Something I am generally too lazy to do, but need to do more of)
