Sorry for cross-posting this, but I haven't received any replies on the "Rack" forum. Since I mostly hang out here, I was hoping some of you guys might have some idea about what's going wrong.

When I turn on the unit, the VU meter for the left channel immediately goes into the red, even with no mic plugged in. If I record the "sound", then I hear a loud humming noise.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong would be GREATLY appreciated - I was about to start a new recording project, but now, it's stalled... :( :(

Thanks guys.

If this post plummets to the bottom of the list, then I'll conclude that I should get my unit repaired professionally...

Thanks...

My pre amps all get mad if I have a line out and no signal in (if the output level is turned up). Plug a mic in and see if it goes away

Thanks, Big Kenny, but the problem remains whether or not mics are plugged in, whether or not there is a line out, and whether or not there is any gain...

I guess it sounds bad...

Yes, it does sound defective. Are you using the same power adapter you got with the unit? Does the other channel and phantom power work OK?

You'd better give M-Audio a call and see what they say. It'll probably have to go back to them, if they can't solve it over the phone.

Yes, I'm using the power-supply supplied by M-audio's distributor here in Australia.

I called them up, but unfortunately they don't allow their tech staff to speak to people over the phone (because they're too busy, I guess). So it looks like I'll just have to send it in.

That's because there is much confusion about where to post microphone preamp info, since it isn't very clear. I have posted about this problem at the "Visitor's Feedback Forum, but haven't got an answer from the administrator as to how it can be fixed.

Well, that sure sucks! I'd try again tomorrow once more before sending it. Tell them where you are and would like to know for sure before sending it all the way in.
