We have a rather large drum kit set up in our basement studio and would appreciate any suggestions in micing it....

THE KIT: snare,bass,3 rack toms, 2 floor toms, rotos, (22"china cymb. 16" crash 13"hi-hat, 8" splash set up like a tree) (20" ride, 18" ride/crash, 18"crash, 14" crash set up above floor toms on opposite side of kit)

THE MIC'S: 3 samson R11, 1 fender P51, 1 benson audio BA30, 1 Beyer Dynamic Bass, and 4 peavey pvm 48...

which ones would you use? get rid of? and how would you place them...

we would really appreciate some help...
we seem to get a lot of bleed and distortion when we use all at once...

we have a couple of songs at http://7.iuma.com
if you guys get a chance listen and e-mail me back with any and all comments...

Thank You,

Kill the samson mikes and purchase some shure
57's and/or 58's. Mic the bass drum with some
Shure beta 52. If budget is a concern, try out
some AKGc10005 for vocals. Also, go out and
audtion some Rode NT-1's. I am work right,
now, but when I get home, I will definitly
give your music a lesson. Looking forward to it!

Excuse the typo...."I Will give your music a listen!!!" not a lesson!!! :)

Thanks for your reply, Have you ever heard of the Peavey pv48 phantom powered mics, there supposed to be like the 57's and I have 4 of them, and the beyer dynamic bass mic was about 170 bucks specifically for the bass drum...the bass drum sounds good..the samsons I just got last week , to use as overheads...with this in mind..and the mics I have...beside getting rid of them how should I use them...

thanks again

Hey man the music was hot!. I liked "Walk Away". you need to bring the drums more in front and just down-tune the toms a bit.The
lead singer was pretty decent, went off-key a bit but fell right back in place. The guitarist was hotttttt!. Love the sound of that old-type phase-shifting distortion.
Overall, That was a very good mix!
I liked it!

THANKS FOR THE COMPLEMENT MISTERQCUE AND THE SUGGESTIONS....
BY THE WAY THE GUITARIST'S RIG IS A MARSHALL JCM 900 AND AN IBANEZ PAUL STANLEY GUITAR NO PEDALS MIC'D WITH BENSON AUDIO BA30

AND AGAIN THE PROBLEM WERE HAVING IS IN THE DRUMS....

WHERE YOU FROM...?

DAVE

I live in New York City, but i bought a house in New Jersey and converted the basement (rather large one at that!) into a
project studio complete with control/monitor
room; separate drummers/musician/vocal rooms.
And eeven had enough room to specifically process masters. Right now I'm at my day job
(I'm gonna'quit soon to work full time engineering). When I get home, I would like to give you "MY OPINION", now remember, it's only an opinion on how I would mic those serious drums you have over there!

my honest opinion. you will make your drum micing easier if you take the kit down to hi hat, left crash, right crash, and ride. maybe a splash (MAYBE), then snare, kick, 2 rack toms, and one floor tom. you really cant tell a difference in groove with all that etra stuff, maybe it will sound a little different as you hit each tom... but how many people who listen to the recordings are going to care if that was adifferent tom sound? its just if there is a tom sound. trust me it will simplify a lot if you decrease the size of the kit.
