This is a thread in which I will ask problems that I run into while using Pro-Tools to avoid making 6 new threads.

In return to try and make this less selfish, I offer to answer any Pro-Tools question you have for me to the best of my ability. I know what you're saying, "Why are we asking the Pro-Tools newb?" ... well, I didn't say I'd know the answer but I know I'll try!

Now for my questions:

How do you copy and paste a selection from multiple tracks?

I've had no luck through searches. I try selecting the tracks, shift+ctrl+c or ctrl+c and it only seems to paste the first track I selected.

My Pro Tools freezes on start up when "Setting up Peripherals", how can I make this stop?

It stops loading and I can't close pro tools or "end program". I have to restart my computer to try again. This happens 1 out of 3 times I start Pro Tools.

Thank you for being patient, helpful, and considerate. Eric.

the best way to avoid Pro Tools troubles is to download REAPER. ;)

If you want to copy and paste you select your selection across the multiple tracks. Than you move the cursor to where you want to paste the selection. If you selected 3 tracks, you have to extend the cursor across the 3 tracks to paste everything. If you have the cursor on one track it's only going to paste your first track selection.

That is spectacular, I understand that. Thank you for your prompt help, I'll be able to try this when I'm home tomorrow morning.:)

Copy your multiple tracks. Apple C. Let's use four tracks as an example. Now place your cursor where you want the four track to start. Now while holding down the "shift control select the four tracks in which you want to paste to, You should now see a flashing cursor point for all four tracks. Apple V.

Sometimes identifying where Pro Tools gets "ugly" upon boot-up tells a story. Sometimes it does NOT.

Have you ever installed Pro Tools without FIRST un-installing a previous version?

Logically then have you un-installed and re-installed Pro Tools since this problem arose?

I suppose one could come to the conclusion that it might be a preference problem although unlikely. Do you pitch preferences often enough?

Sticking with the theme that it might not have anything to do with peripherals (even though it appears to crash there) Pro Tools often pitches a bitch upon boot when there are corrupted plug-ins. Are all your plug-ins doing ok and are up to date??

Try moving each third party plug-in into the "unused" folder and re-boot. Does the re-boot get smoother?

Nope this is my first install and it went okay. This could be reason to try a reinstall as you say.

I do little or no preference changes so that shouldn't be the problem.

I am running clean plug ins. But I would like to try moving the plug ins and reboot, thats a good idea.

Thanks for your prompt and useful help Joseph!

No, No you misunderstand.

You NEED to pitch your preferences and data bases as a part of your weekly/monthly Pro Tools maintenance.

It's fundamental to keeping Pro Tools running. It does NOT matter how often you adjust your preferences.

What's your operating system and Pro Tools version? And what hardware are you using?

I don't think you need to trash the prefs. as part of a monthly routine....but it's good every once and awhile when something weird pops up. I don't think I've trashed mine in about a year.
Look over this:

No you absolutely do not and it may not be the case for you. HOWEVER in this case we have seemingly a group of individuals who DO NOT yet have all the tools they need at their disposal to solve "everyday" Pro Tools problems. No offense guys..just trying to help :)

The suggestion arose out of a user saying "I don't need to pitch my preferences cause I never go to my preference page" Clearly a fundamental misunderstanding of how and why we pitch preferences. Digi felt strong enough about this by way of solving problems they built a PC sub applet to address it.

It's MUCH, MUCH better to have them pitch preferences and data bases (and understand why) by way of keeping those gremlins off their plate (maintenance) than to tell them it's not really needed. The greater in this case far out weights the evil it might cause.

Without the fundamental diagnostic tools under control my experience is those in the position of needing help (tech support) run down amazingly WRONG roads in an attempt to correct simple problems. The idea here as I've stated sooo many times before is Will Rogers inspired. If you find yourself in a tech support hole...stop digging.

As all good tech support and tech solutions start with a process of elimination it's always good to know the user has a firm grasp of the fundamentals before they dig a deeper hole both for themselves and those trying to help.
