$1300 would also buy you eight mini-traps from Ethan Weiner. Getting rid of the bass standing waves in your room might be the single biggest upgrade you are likely to make for the money.

i think laptop has the best soultion for me. i have been thinking about pro tools le for a long-long time and now i think its time. not having automation just sucks ass and i can never get my mixes as good as i could with automation. man, i had my hand on the phone to put in a order from mercenary for either a soundelux or a distressor. tubedude had a great idea. what a killer chain. you all are the biggest help on earth for me.

With the purchase of the GR, you've bought your first "keeper" professional level item. Don't look back. Buy quality, one item at a time.

In looking at your gear, I would agree with a few others that ONE good mic might just be the ticket.

That Steven Paul mic should show up anytime.
I recommend auditioning mic's before buying them... unless you have money to throw away. Anyway, shipping shouldn't take long... how many days ago did he ship yours to you?

1 great river mp2nv.
monitors-event 20/20,alesis monitor ones+ra 100 amp.
lexicon and alesis effect units.
1 dbx 262 compressor
1 dbx 242 eq.
1 alesis masterlink.

what would you do with $1300??.

Jay,
Even if you go a computer, there's a bit of stuff that you could stand to sell. Sell the Alesis effects units. (save up for one of the new Kurzweil effects boxes for ~$650 or so). Once you get the computer, you won't need that Masterlink so sell that too. Sell those Monitors Ones and the amp. You only need one speaker. Although the Events are not my favorites in the budget range, they are decent enough to be used on their own.

Wish list:
1 good vocal mic. In the lower-end range, consider the MXL V69 (decent budget tube mic for ~$300). For a bit more consider the Neumann TLM 103, Shure KSM series, Audio Technica 40 series. I've heard mixed things about the Blue Baby Bottle. It seems you have to spend a bit more for Blue mics before you have a clearly better mic than the lot of budget mics.

At the bottom of the truly "high end" consider Lawson L47SH ($995) or Soundelux U195 (check www.mercenary.com Fletcher has 'em). You may also want to consider a ribbon from Royer, AEA, etc. I've used two vintage RCA ribbons and a vintage Fostex ribbons from my mentor. VERY great sound. No artificial highs... warm and toasty. ;).

Who knows, you may make enough from selling the junk to get one of these entry-level "high-end" mics.
