Me and my friend want to start a mobile recording unit to start recording live bands and concerts, but we are a little unsure as to where to begin. He has a DAT recorder and a decent mic and we are looking into getting at least two more mics and a mixer. He will be spending his own money for an 8 track over the comming break. In total we have about $1000 to $1500 to spend on mics and a mixer. Any ideas for what we should look into buying?

mics: sm57's and 58's for almost everything. A decent kick mic, overhead mic as well. But I can't be too specific on those last two.

as far as a mixer goes, depending on how many channels you'd need - I'd just go for a mackie that has what you need.

sorry I couldnt be MORE help.

hey, check out the minidisc forum!

Not to discourage you, but I'd suggest that if you don't have a decent knowledge of the gear, you might want to learn a little more before you start recording bands. Maybe work with someone else for awhile until you get to know the gear and what it can do.

Will you also provide amplification for these bands you wanna record also?
