nope
before i go crazy buying stuff, i'm wondering if this sounds like a reasonable setup. my digital 12-track has built-in preamps which are actually reasonably quiet, but no phantom power.

i play metal and fusion. the kit is a tama starclassic performer. close miking on 6 toms isn't an option. so this is what i'm looking to do:

(2) mxl 603s OH, through m-audio dmp3 (for phantom power), to daw
audix d6 on kick, directly to daw
sm57 on snare, directly to daw

if i'm not mistaken, i don't need an impedance-matching transformer on my xlr-to-trs adapters for the d6 and 57, since i'm going directly into my balanced 1/4" preamp inputs on the 12-track, which will accept both mic or line level signals. please correct me if i'm wrong on this.

i already own the 57, and just ordered the 603s pair. i'd be buying the d6 and dmp3.

opinions?

That'd work. Start with Recorderman for the OH's. Yes, xlr->trs cables.

ya know man, while the 57 is a workhorse and a great snare mic, you might try the audix i5...... just a suggestion.

I have I5's and 57's, I like both. I often like the I5 better, but sometimes it is pretty bad on given source. I can always get at least to "meh" with a 57.

well, i got my 603 pair a few days ago, which sound OH SO MUCH BETTER than those damn cad icm-417s! right now i have them powered by my behri mixer (the dmp3 should be here by tomorrow), so the sound should only get better.

the d6 showed up today, and holy cow what an improvement, and i haven't even really tried yet!

the recorderman technique is working out great too, by the way.

as for the i5, i've thought about it, but i'll really just be blending in the 57 for fullness anyway--the OHs should handle most of the work. i'll probably end up trying one some day, but for now the extra $100 could be better spent, since i just dropped over $400 on all this other stuff...(got good deals on ebay though!)
