A tape has - for the first time in ten years - broken inside the third ADAT in my system. Now all it can do is spin. Since there's no tension on the tape, no controls are active. It's an important tape that I can probably salvage, but if not, I won't cry about it. I just need to get the damn thing out so that I can proceed with sessions.

Ideas, anyone?

Ken, I've had the same thing happen on a few occassions. This isn't for the faint of heart but I had to take it out of the rack, peal it open and go in after it. I was succesfull on all occassions but warning!, the possibilities for disaster are legion. If you decide to go in after it, be extremely carefull around the heads and transport linkage.

Rat - Believe me - I've been in many times before. I'm up to my elbows in it right now, with the top AND bottom covers off, but I just can't find a way to trick it into releasing the damn tape.

This is the first time I haven't been able to resolve a jam - I think it's being stubborn because the tape is actually severed, not just munched as happens on occasion.

And you've tried the diagnostic "eject tape" command?

- Press TRACK SELECT #1 and #7 during power-up

- Use "pitch-up/down" to locate "CAP"; PRESS AUTO-PLAY and the tape should come out

Bruce - you're AWESOME! I knew some fellow nerd would come through with something like that.

Strangely enough, I was trying certain combinations guessing that one would work, but I had "kick machine" instead of "Press TRACK SELECT #1 and #7 during power-up, - Use "pitch-up/down" to locate "CAP"; PRESS AUTO-PLAY."

Just shows how damn finicky these machines can be, I guess.

Thanks again,

And Kielson - I do have a DAW, running Samplitude Producer - it's flawless. I keep ADATs because so many people still bring them to me. I was in the process of dumping 24 tracks into my PC when this happened.

But I appreciate the compassion.
