maybe
also folks are reporting good sound by getting techs to replace the tubes in things like art tube mp and the ilk.
i agree the dmp3 is hard to beat and the vtb1 from what ive been told. also , and ive never tried these but at sescom.com is what looks to be in their sips range , a balanced differential circuit for
mics at 33 dollars.
dont rule out for cheap old tascam portastudios or fostex for mic preamps. just use the line out to the sound card. ive seen these
as low as 5 bucks in used places and in bargain ads. tascam designed pretty decent mic preamps.
one of my songs at soundclick used a portastudio preamp into the soundcard because i was curious as to how it might sound
on a christmas song i wrote a few years back compared to expensive preamps i had at the time.
"Rock with me at christmas" thats had lots of plays used cheap portastudio preamps. in comparison "The Wrecker" which was number 1 in guitar rock for the longest time used the mackie vlz pre's. I stayedaway from the mackie eq of course.
"THe working mans song" that has had tons of play on soundclick used , and i mean total crap transistors that you can buy 20 to the dollar called 2n2222a. mebe cost me 5 bucks to build it.
but many people love the vocals. Maybe i fluked out, i dont know. sometimes you just get golden days when everything works.
Ive tried a lot of preamp designs but the 2n2222a transistor seems to have a "vintage warmth" thats likeable and hard to pin down, even though its higher noise than say a 2n5088.
this brings me to a point. i seem to loose character the more lower noise the transistor is . just somethiong as a tip i'm passing
on if your considering diy preamps.
