I know these type of posts aren't popular, where someone comes in with pretty much no knowledge of computers and just asks a bunch of questions, but this is just a case where you guys are one of the only places to turn and one of the best places to turn.

I've been recording on my dumpy ass Compaq for years and I'm a cool edit pro vet but now it's time to move up. Maybe protools, maybe this, maybe that... maybe what? I have no idea where to start. Here's what I can tell you.

I want to build a system for anywhere between $1200 and $1500 (that includes software, a solid mic and soundcard) and really get into some heavy stuff. I'm a pc user, but am not against making the move to mac (although it scares me). I want to place an emphasis on the vocal mic, nothing ridiculously expensive, but solid. Any help would be appreciated.

Peace,

Jay

I think you've pretty much ruled out getting a Mac based on your budget.

Anyway, your computer questions have been answered several times on this forum. Try searching for past threads. As to which mic to get, try asking/searching the mic forum.

This should get you started:
Athlon XP 1800 cpu
Gigabyte GA-7DX+ mobo
256-512MB DDR RAM
a case with a 350+ watt power supply
M-Audio DMP3 mic pre

Go over to Newegg and check out prices. You really don't even need to check other online vendors - they have great prices and great customer service.

You also didn't say how many ins and outs you'd need on your sound card, so you need to figure that out first before you seek model recommendations.

Just breaking in..
When people mention DAWs, I know what's it all about. I guess it's a abbreviation but what does it actually stand for?

IF you are going the PC route, the motherboard/CPU combo Elevate recommends is excellent. And SHOULD you go with a Digi001 for ProTools, I can tell you from experience it works really, really well.

I think I'll be using 4 inputs, straight up I'll need one for my mic and one for my keyboard, the occasional guitar and whatever else.
