Hello - Total newbie to recording. - Protools M-Powered and Command 8 question
Hi,
(Please forgive the explination as I try to get to the point...)
I generaly do live or theatre sound.
I was providing sound re-enforcement for a new client a fortnight ago. this was a group of singers (SM58 each) in a small hall singing songs with keys (DI) and kit (D112 + 2xc391)
They asked for a recording. I have a copy of Protools M-Powered and a firewire 410 I use for making sound effects for theatre.
I recorded 4 tracks from each night,
1) Keys,
2) Kit
3) Vocals
4) Audience. (c451 ck8)
Tracks 1-3 were taken as postfade group sends from the pa desk.
I have a command|8 on loan from a friend and I've just started to see what I can do with these 4 tracks.
(The client seemed very happy with a trial mix played back over the PA in the venue.)
My questions are:.
>The control|8 seems to be fine except a second after I move a fader the audio out of the 410 distorts. This bemuses me as there is no audio going through the c|8. - anyone got any ideas?
>I have tracks that are about 45min long. Is there an easy way in protools to split them into virtual chunks for the application of plugins. At the moment I'm spliting the vocal group into a second group, applying a reverb plugin to this group and automating the return level to the mix, as I would in a live enviroment. Is this the best way of doing it?
>How compressed should my final mix be. I'm used to the dynamic range of working live, should this be similar or should I try to keep it down to 12dB or so?
Thanks for letting me ask these questions
I've had a brief look arround your forums and can't see an obvious place to ask my question Is there a protools rooom I can ask my questions? Alternativly is there another forum somewhere I should be going to? I'm very new to recording so please forgive me. I have just dived in and your forum came #1 for a google search on home recording.
Thanks again
James
