stevieb sometimes goes off on rants which are way excessive to the questions of a newb. So disregard all his caps and the insulting tone he took. There's no need for that and it's not appropriate in the newbie forum.

Having said that ....... I encourage you to dive on into this stuff that's interesting you right now.

But the thing is ....... most musicians play because they're driven to do so. They don't need to look for someone to tell them how to get interested in music ..... they do it, often from a young age, because it's just 'in their blood' so to speak.

To me, the fact that your question is at least partly one of "how can I get into this enough to actually do it?" is an indication that it's possibly not gonna be your big passion. If it were, you'd already be doing it and absolutely everyone has something to write about. It doesn't have to be from your own life ...... rappers frequently write about society and what's going on in the world.

So there's definitely stuff for you to rap about so get to it.
Either it's your thing or it's not. Welcome to the board and as you progress from here there'll be plenty of help (and occasional non-sequitor rants)

Man, REALLY, what is your problem? blah blah blah ................
don't come in the newbie forum and launch into attacks on newbies.
Plenty of other people in this thread raised the issue of "I'm not totally sure this is your thing" without getting insulting and ranting on a newb.

If you can't come in and try to be helpful, just stay out of this forum.

First of all...

You don't sing, don't play an instrument, never written music or poetry. You are in an ENGINEERING program. You do what you are told... dude, you are NOT a creative person. DEAL with it. You never WILL be a creative person. Creative people get into trouble BECAUSE they are creative- one of the things they create- one of the things they can not HELP but create, is trouble for them selves. THAT'S where the "crisis" comes from. NOBODY, sane or not, WANTS that to keep happening. Do not go out LOOKING for trouble- the kind you will find will NOT get you where you THINK you want to go, and if you can't see that now, or take someone's advise about that, the only other way you will realize that is to see it from the other side- and then it will be too late- you will have wrecked your neat, orderly life, and have NOTHING to replace it.

By all means, continue to appreciate and enjoy listening to music. Finish school, get a job where you wear a white short-sleeve shirt and a dark tie, tweaking some valve that is down-line of a Cat tower so that some oil company can make 0.002% more profit on every barrel of oil they squeeze out of the Alaskan wilderness, get married and raise 2.5 children in a house just down the street from the one you grew up in, and enjoy your life as it going to be.

Your idea of an engineer seems to be off. A "successful" engineer is one who is creative and thinks outside the box. But you say I should be happy doing the same thing all day and just let life roll? Nah, doesn't sound like a happy life at all.

But thanks anyways, you're the reason I want to do this so much more now, haha.

Also, thanks to everyone one for the support.

Thanks!

I completely understand it not being my thing or whatever. Again, I'm doing this as something I want to explore. While growing up, my parents pretty much drilled the mentality of 'focus on school, get money and you'll be happy" haha. So, i pretty much lost any chance to do any hobby, but music would be the one thing i wanted to do.

Seeing as you don't have any musical chops to draw from you might want to look into loop-based production along the lines of Ableton Live and maybe something like a NI Maschine.

You didn't lose any chance at anything - you will be happier if you don't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from or how your going to pay your rent - I know plenty of people that live like that and it's no way to live. You will enjoy any hobby much more when you can spend your free time on it with peace of mind - not worrying how your going to pay the electric bill. I enjoy music now much more than I did when I was your age, because now, if I want a new guitar or new gear - I just buy it - I don't have to make do with a bunch of old crap which is most of what I could afford when I was 20...

Right, what ArcadeKO said.... you're only 20, you haven't lost any chance at anything. I agree with your parents completely. Now is the time to secure your future, get a good education and get a good job. You'll thank yourself over and over again when you get older.

But no reason you can't start on your hobby now. Especially with products that are available to us these days. While you're in school, you might try to take an elective for piano or guitar, though not necessary for what you want to do, it will give you great insight into music, theory, writing, etc.

And C7's suggestion for Ableton is spot on. Probably exactly what you're looking for.

Have fun

as long as it's just a hobby, you'll be fine

...just don't quit your day job. seriously

The typical shit is spewing from you and your "know-it-all" attitude, when in fact you continually prove that you know exactly dick about any topic you expound upon.

STFU already. Nobody around here needs your ignorant negative stupid advice on ANY topic.

Now, you see, Grimtraveler and Chili are able to disagree with me withOUT being the ignorant asshole you can't HELP but be. Hell, even Greg_L and I can agree to disagree- but you have to just go off for no good reason, just because it's me saying something- it has begun to appear that you go out of you way just to rag on me.

Pathetic. Get some help.

Now, to address everybody else...

Yeah, I did "go off," and it was in part due to a rather black mood I was in, this morning. Mea Culpa (which I so prefer to "My bad.") I didn't observe the unwritten rules for the noob forum- or maybe the are written, but either way, I am aware of them and I pretty much ignored them. That sort of thing could get me in a time-out, which I must admit, I deserve. OP, my point is, you really are not, by your own admission, an musician. Without the sharp barb I put on it earlier, I think you might make a perfectly good engineer- it sounds like you might be in "rebellion mode" at the moment- nothing inherently wrong with that, but really, dude, you got things going pretty good. Do think twice before you upset that apple cart.

Seriously dude, it's all good. Again, I'm not really doing this to impress anybody but myself. I am not saying that i'm dissapointed in my career choice either. I'm just saying, I'd like to find a hobby to do on the side. Something that in 30 years, I can still do, and not take so seriously.

But look at it this way. If you had a great job, but once you were done, you came home, and you just sat there. You don't have any friends around to hang out with, you live essentially miles away from any sort of entertainment (plus, gas is expensive, and no, my company doesn't cover that :P ), and you don't have any hobby or a project of your own to keep you sane...would you really be satisfied with that?

That's what it's come down to. I'm just trying to explore some things, and I chose something that I've wanted to do but didn't have the time or chance to until now.

So yeah, just to reiterate. I'm not looking to change my career, just looking for something to do on my downtime when I have some.

Sounds like a perfectly good plan to me! :D

So what can a poor boy do? except to play in a rock n' roll band. --~-- Mick Jagger.

Sounds like a perfectly good plan to me! :D

Well, gotta admit, it sounds (ahem) "sound" to me, too. :D In fact...

Just this morning, I learned that "HAMMOND INVENTOR, LAURENS HAMMOND WAS NOT A MUSICIAN, COULDN'T PLAY THE ORGAN HE INVENTED, AND LIKELY WAS TONE-DEAF." In caps because that's how it is on this page:

LESLIE SPEAKERS AND HAMMOND ORGANS RUMORS

Then, my memory jogged, I googled Leo Fender, and "his" Wikipedia entry never identifies HIM as a musician, either:

Leo Fender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I decided to stop there, because I know I would get different results if I googled "Les Paul...":)

So, it seems tone-deaf, never-played-an-instrument engineers are important to music.

But, heck, we all already knew that, even if we "forgot.":drunk:

sounds like the thing for you to do man.

And trust me ................ as a full-time pro that has does nothing else for 40 years, you've got a far better future than I have. Good luck.

Sounds like a perfectly good plan to me! :D
I second the motion !

So what can a poor boy do? except to play in a rock n' roll band. --~-- Mick Jagger.
Yeah, Mick the grammar school boy that went to university and when he wrote that was one rich pop star !!
That said, it's in my top 3 of Stones' songs.

Your only 20. So there's nothing to stop you from buying a guitar and getting some lessons now. It could ignite a passion for it.
You don't have to have experianced something to be able to write about it. If you have empathy you can write about another's pain. While involved in jail and prison ministry I wrote a couple of songs about jail. The guys loved them and always wanted me to play and sing them. Same thing when I was doing Homeless ministry. Volunteer work or ministry can give you exposure to the plight of others.
Get a book on songwritting or lyric writting. There's rules you need to know on song structure.
You're going to school to be a engineer so I know you can learn throught that method.
Plenty of people are making excellent music without playing a single instrument. Just useing software and loops. Go to Looperman.com and check that place out if you think you might like to make that kind of music.
Good luck,
Blair

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but just wondering.
Do you have any recommnded books or videos for peotry writing?
I can think of a lot of ideas, but I can't ever put them in words that sounds good.

I don't know of any books on poetry, but I'm sure google can find some for you. But writiing poetry or songs is a matter of practice, like most anything else you want to be good at. Write everyday. You'll get good at it in no time and enjoy what you write. Just gotta practice. There is a website I find very helpful called the Rhyme Zone. You should look at gettting a rhyming dictionary too, because the website isn't exhaustive.
