Hello and just starting to record

Hi all. Great forum you have here.

I finally got around to connecting my 424 MKIII to my computer via the line in so I can burn recordings to CD. Probably not the best setup, but I'm working with what I have at hand for now. I was just happy to hear stereo separation after the connection.

I'm sure to have some questions in the future, but if anyone wants to throw me some advice about my meager setup now, please do.

Tascam 424MKIII (still learning about it)
SM57 mic
PC with stock sound card (Avance AC97,seems to work OK)
Gold Wave installed (still scratching my head with anything beyond record)
Will be recording guitar and banjo.

Not looking for pro quality, just wishing to burn to CD after recording.

Hey NH, welcome to recording!
Well, sounds like you'll be busy for a bit learning what you have... when you do have it mastered, you might want to think of upgrading that soundcard and experimenting with different software that can do more in the way of eq and compression for your final stereo tracks... those are probably your weakest links in your recording chain, and there's lots of advice on this board in those departments!

Getting Started

Well, you've got half the battle won and that's having the desire to do it. The rest just comes with experience and some money. I started with a home-made(crappy) mic preamp, a $99 guitar multi-effects pedal and a $30 Radio Shack microphone. I recorded into the sound card on my pc and was able to record covers for the experience by downloading the midi files and replacing the parts with my own playing/singing. I now have a studio in my garage(heated and cooled, thank goodness) with about tens of thousands of $$$'s of musical and recording gear. I've produced several CD's for my band and others and I'm looking to mix/master other people's projects. Just keep at it and don't be afraid to ask questions - "The teacher will come when the student is ready"
