I just pulled the trigger on a Line 6 Lava Lamp modeler. Twenty seven of the best LL models out there. I can't tell the difference!

 Dannnnnng! Thats some good stuff, something I could only dream of affording right now.
Be sure to put up some sound files when you get it! :D

Chiming (cowbelling) in late, but definitely purple (on mine the lava is a warm yellowish-red).

Bah! The virtual lava lumps are thin and shallow and need tons of EQ!

Ya know, which color lava lamp to get has a lot more to do with the room you are recording in. Color and texture of the walls, placement of the speakers and mixing chair, supplemental mood lighting, etc... There are endless variables and only you will know which is right for you.

I love the LL modelers too, but mine doesn't have the "Always on Top" option and sometimes gets buried under my Cubase window. :(

I heard McDSP is coming out with a new LL plugin that enables that feature. As well as pre-eq'd presets.
A sweet LL crossover compressor is coming out from Waves too! :D can't wait for it to come out and not afford it.

That would be cool, but I'm all UAD and they don't do Lava. (and to think they're in california)

I use a freebie I found on kvraudio. Don't think it's there anymore.

I simply use a VST Lava Lamp modeler, so it's easy to recall presets for any given cowbell genre. Sure it's not as warm as an analog lava lamp, but it's doesn't eat up much processing power so I can get away with many instances of it.... different colors for rhythm and lead cowbell, for example.

I still haven't had the time to get a new bulb for mine, so I use this screensaver.

All this talk of getting professional cowbell quality out of cheap lava lamps is misguided.

Every professional studio I've been in uses Pro Lavas so that must be the only serious choice, whatever the cost.

I have a simple solution that has always worked for my cowbell recordings you need stereo lava lamps, a purple AKG LL500a with blue liquid, and a Nice Neumann 5202sLL Lava lamp in a figure 8 sorta doing and off center m/s patern is by far the best you can do, but you need to drop serious cash on your lamps or you'll only get CFL sounding mixes its strange hearing all this mono lamp cowbell, oh and don't worry about the mic's any radio shack mic is all you need

Interesting, I think I may try that method sometime. Have you had good results using the lamps with green and yellow?
Just curious.

Hmm, so what about some Hardcore Gansta Ballad Pop?
Which one is good overall?

Anything Lo-Fi screams Strobe Light. Without that, it's just a poor recording.

Don't bother. The green and yellow together are notorious for drop outs and ugly phasing.

I can tell you that lime green doesn't cut it.
... just leaves me green with envy.
