Headphone question

I'm looking for some decent headphones, but all the ones I seem to fine have a 3.5mm male end and then come with an adapter to make it a quarter inch plug...Is this how they all are now? Would this not effect the sound in some way passing through the adapter?

It certainly adds another point of failure, but it doesn't affect the sound (assuming the contacts are clean and solid).

An awful lot come that way now, alas. As massive says, it won't affect your sound quality other than to be a point where you can lose the signal entirely if the connection is bad.

I've been known to cut off the 3.5mm jack and solder on my own 6.5 but the fine wires used are a bit of a pain (and, invariably, the next use for the cans will want a mini jack!).
