Hi, I recently purchased a Rolls Stereo Headphone Amp to help my band while recording using our Fostex VF-16. The manual stresses the importance of using "stereo" headphones. For the time being i had been using a cheap pair of Phillips (what i presumed to be stereo) headphones with an 1/8" plug to a 1/4" adapter. However when I use it in combination with the system sound only comes through the left ear. Is it possible that the adapter is mono and that is my problem? What could be any other reason for this effect? Thanks for your help.

Quite possible. Look at the 'rings' or 'bands' on the connector. There should be 2 if it's stereo. 1 if it's mono.

Most of those adaptors are flakey at the best of times. Other possiblities are that your headphones are defective, or the adapter is (or everything is panned to one side.. :) ).

My guess is the adapter is mono.

I've got one of those Rolls headphone amps and it expects a TRS plug that is wired just like the plug would be to pick up the stereo signal. So you need a "sister" cord that has stereo TRS jacks on either end. That's always better than using an adapter and couldn't cost more than a few dollars at the parts store.

Wire it Tip to Tip, Ring to Ring and Sleeve to Sleeve and you're in business.

Yo the next Day:

Here is, perhaps, a simple way to do it.

I run a stereo 1/4 plug from my BR8 headphone output into my Peavy headphone patch box. Stereo in both ends. Thus, when you patch in other headphones, which have a stereo 1/4 inch plug, you should get the sound in both ears or however you pan from the recorder.
