Headphone levels while tracking...

I have a little problem when recording.

Im using a PreSonus HP4 from my soundcard to headphones.

We record onto beats already mixed down to a single track. The music tracks level is set to 0db. When tracking I always have to turn the headphone amp up to hear the vocals from the mic to through the cans, but when I do the music track is always too loud on the ears.

So I usually end up bringing the music track down 6db or so, which is a good balance in the headphones when tracking but its usually a nightmare when mixing.

Is there any way to fix this...?

I tried recording the vocals a little louder when recording (without distorting) but vocals levels have to be brought down to -16 db or so to fit in with the music track. Theres still no distortion this way, its just harder to mix.

Sounds like some gain structuring needs to be gone over. Also consider getting a mixer, even a small one to that you can have more control over whats feeding the headphone amp. Typically mixers have differnt ways of sending mixes to the headphones where a sound card doesn't have any way to separate mix and input level adjustment.
