I am tracking vox in my closet. My closet is about 30 feet away from my mixer/DAW. The cable on the cans that I use to monitor myself are too small. I bought an extension cable from Raydeho Crack Shack and all it does is send a nasty distorted sound into my ear cannals. Is a headphone amp the answer? I am particularly thinking of the personal monitor amp.

Yo Virtual one:

If you are just tracking and not mixing, you might want to look at a pair of wireless cans. I use a pair in my studio for routine work but not for mixing.

They run about one hundred or so: JVC, or several other brands.

I use a simple but effective Peavey headphone amp; I can plug in four pair of cans and it works great.

Watch out for cosmetically good looking high priced can amps; try before you buy.

Thanks GH!

I am actually planning on buying a pair of corded Sennheizers. I already really like the sound of these cans. Should I go for the headphone amp. The one I was specifically thinking of is rolls self monitoring amp.

Yo Virtuosity:

Since you're in the California area, should be lots of shops where you can try the phone amp before you buy.

You probably have a bad cable. If the sound is that bad than an amp may not help unless you can send it a balanced signal from your recorder/mixer.

I've extended headphone cables for 20-30ft and you do lose volume but it shouldn't be all distorted. There is something besides the distance causing your probems here. Are you using a headphone feed from a mixer? What are you driving the cans with now?
