head bag (vocal)

my computer wigged out and I didnt think that posted.. the site has been deeply depressed lately..

Pretty soft kick but it's good enough in the not-so-loud sections. Oh, some vocal effects again :D well, it's your trademark, so I won't complain. Weird guitar-riff that back and forth wailing. Is that really a guitar? Nice string stuff. Ok. Now something unexpected just happened at 2:40. What the hell is that solo sound there? Kinda flute sounding. Must be your synth. Ok, the end sound (at 3:17) was identical to a particular sound from the album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis. I don't remember what song, though. Was it "Ravine", or something? Anyway, that info is pretty useless, but I still decided to point it out :D

What can I say about the song. Well, IMO it needs some work. I don't know what, but something. I like the ending sequence more than I like the actual song parts. I mean, I DO like the weird-o guitar riff, but... I dunno. Something needs to be done to the song. Maybe add something, maybe change something. There's nothing wrong with the actual mix, but... hmm... I really don't know what should be done to the song. Maybe I'm too sleepy or something. I guess this song sounds too much like your other work. Kinda blends into them in a way, so that it doesn't have the personality of your other stuff. Just my opinion, and it may change. But at the moment anyway. Not a bad song, but needs work.

Two comments. First, more kick please. Something to offset the solitary snare there. Second, put in something to scare me, awaken me or otherwise shock me. I'm thinking about something like Phil Collin's toms in 'Something In The Air Tonight' if you know what I mean. You know, like when you're listening on headphones and just settling into some comfortable piece of music and something happens that startles you and makes you jump.

Personally, I dug those vocal FX a lot.

rats - one day I hope to have a real cello.. I played one recently in the store.. It only took a few minutes to find some notes, and I really got into it.. thanks for the comments man!

participant - I agree with you.. maybe I'll try to make the next one more interesting. :) your an important part of this place for me.. thanks for the private help as well! get some new music up..

David - hope you weren't too disappointed.. I'll try to make it up on the next one.. thanks for checkin' it out man..

SLuiCe - hey Tom, first, good idea about the ending.. When I redo it, I will pan the outro lead to give it some space... I always print the vocals effects, so I can't change them.. I am going to resing this with less effects, and completely change the mix.. Check out Guernicas reply for an excuse list.. Maybe I should have left this an instrumental.. I'm sure you noticed that I recorded this mp3 @128.. That didnt help matters, but the mix comments still apply.. I know I can sing this better anyway.. besides, I have nothing better to do.. thanks for the 'five joint rating.' I actually only smoked 4 during this recording though.. :) (that is 4 pre rolled fattys of hydroponic, smoked down until I burned my fingers, and threw the roach in the bong!) :D

jcmm - hey Joel, no matter what I throw out there, you always drop in for a comment.. thanks man! The only thing I used the computer for on this song was the mp3 encoding.. I did get the 'Waves' thing, but so far it has proved to be a waste of money.. The one time I used it, everyone said the song didnt sound as good as my usual tunes.. The whole problem is that I dont have monitors hooked up to my computer, so I apply the waves while monitoring through computer speakers.. That's a dumb idea, so I may have to get monitors for the computer as well.. I have nothing else to spend my money on, so screw it.. I'm going to remix and resing this one.. maybe I'll add some more stuff.. thanks for the comments man..

Cranky One - hey Crank, I really am playing out the vocal effects, and it annoys me too.. I'm going to resing this thing without the 80 vocal effects.. I think the bass drum was one of those 'take the pillow out of the bass drum' type sounds.. I'm still trying to find my 'main' drum set sound.. I just recently got my pads working again after much sodering.. I play the drums with the sticks backwards, and it eventually rattles the wire inside causing a bad connection.. I piled on the solder so hopefully it will last a little longer this time.. The sound @2:40 was a patch called SH-2000.. I have no idea what it is, or what it means, but thats what it said on the display of my keyboard! :D I really like sounds like that.. I think that's why I always use an EBow.. Also because I suck and I definitely need many effects on anything I do.. I am going to completely revamp this song.. maybe that will give it its own identity.. We will be listening to our thing soon.. thanks for the thoughts bro! Post some new music!

crawdad - I totally hear what your saying! That Phil Collins drum sound you mentioned is a great one.. That has always been my favorite song by him as well.. I didnt want to scare anyone with this one, but I do feel ya.. I'm going to completely revamp this tune right after I get some Christmas music done... Your the first person to mention the bass drum being low.. Maybe it's more of a weak bass drum rather than the volume? I will keep it in mind when remixing.. thanks for checking it out crawdad.. For me, it's like getting a pro's opinion..

Sam, don't take it like that. Guess I've been quite the shithead lately  What CrankyOne and Crawdad were saying about the song needing "something" is what I was trying to say. It's not at all "uninteresting"... but imo this is one of those toons that needs an attention catching sound... something that could be the song's signature... i dunno... some sample, a percussive sound that repeats, a disco whistle... something that gives it some more contrast in places

Then again, I don't know sh*t and you guys are the musicians here :D Just do what Tom and Al say... and it'll sound great :)

Tonight the people of the planet Earth may all rest peacefully and breathe a little easier knowing that B. Sabbath(Samji) has chosen to focus his attentions on the creation of music rather than becoming a bio-geneticist or some other potentially destructive endeavor.
Yes on that fateful day when Sabbath took the money his parents had earmarked for a downpayment on mad scientist school and spent it on a bag of weed,a sansamp and a lava lamp the world narrowly missed enevitable destrction.
So mothers rest easy tonight as you tuck your children into bed knowing that as your husband takes out the garbage there will not be a hideously deformed, bloodthirsty mutant waiting behind the recyclables bin ready to suck your spouses brain right out of his skull.
No tonight instead of trying to splice human genes with crabgrass or sewing together dead body parts in a feindish attempt to reannimate them Sabbath is harmlessly fiddling with his Pod-pro and other assorted non-lethal gadgets.
And yes while his music may cause a hardcore John Tesch fan to slip into an irreversable coma or make a Lionel Ritchie groupie have convulsions and possibly swallow his tongue the majority of the inhabitants of this planet are reasonably safe from his evil twisted schemes.
Compared to the possibilities that might have been the problems of todays world pale in comparison.

Sabbath you may not understand now,but this is meant to be a compliment.
Yes one day many years from now in the distant future you will be rocking in your chair at the old stoners home and it will hit you like a bolt of lightning.
And as your bong goes crashing to the ground and the nurses rush to your side to see if your depends have exceeded the maximum load capacity you will have an epiphany, and it will be then and only then that you think to yourself.....

"Hey acidrock really dug my song!"

ATTENTION PARTICIPANT!!

dude, your reply was not taken offensive or negative to me in any way at all whatsoever.. Your feedback is among the best this place has to offer.. I do not get bothered in any way shape or form when I read peoples comments about what needs improvement..

this place has helped my recording so much, that I smoke most of my friends! :D Why? Directly because of you and people like you..

please dont ever worry how you phrase your wording with me.. If you said 'I hate this song!' That still wouldnt offend me.. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't be bad to hear because my songs *usually* don't come from happy town.. If someone hated a song I wrote, for me that would mean they hated the feeling they got when they heard it.. Much like I hate the feeling I have of being able to write miserable mood songs so easily..

no matter what the responses are, my music served it's purpose when I recorded it..

I don't even back up things anymore..

So stop worrying about how you put it, as long as you put it! :D

I am crawling back into my bong now.. :D

acidrock - I just caught your reply, and that has to be the best response in the history of responses!! I am saving that reply for later liner notes! speechless.. :D thanks for that!

Acidrock...put that down as spoken word over some really dramatic music and post it!

Mandatory.

Ditto--that acidrock reply is not only well written, its right on the money in regards to Sam, I think. Its stuff like this that makes this place fun. ---

Hey, is the board all the sudden real fast again?!!

Last thing--Sam, OK--I have a request for you this time (if you want). Write something fast, uptempo, kick me in the ass style. With your unique signature and imprint of course. Doesn't have to be happy (I'm cutting you slack there)--just rockin'. Every once in a while, I think it might be fun to give each other assignments--just to makes us all stretch a little. "Turn the Page" is coming along according to Lt. Bob, by the way.

Yes, mother :D

My January is finished. Well not quite, since it REALLY needs vocals, and I'm not releasing it without them. Well, if I can't find the time to sing the vocals, then it will be an instrumental (AGAIN!), but anyway. I did make another Megadeth cover last week, but I dunno... It's on my site, but I don't know ... Well, I don't know about the mixing part of it. I guess you can listen to it and be slightly amused and stuff, but I'm pretty satisfied with the sound of it, except the vocals (I sung the vocals on summer when I had some time to sing) But yeah... hmm... ok, I guess I'll make a post about it now...

LMFAO! I thought all John Tesch fans were already in a coma, why else would they listen to that stuff?

Sam, love your guitar sounds. I know nuttin about guitars and I'm guessing that the guitar nazi's will tell you to push some air or something like that but damn, your guitar sound is killer!

I like the sample at the end. Perfect imo.

I'm with crawdad right now. I wanna hear something more uptempo again. Every song I heard where you cranked up the tempo and rocked has been outstanding.

Having pesky fans is a bitch, huh?

crawdad - you got it! I will begin working on something immediately.. hmmmmmmm, "something fast uptempo , kick you in the ass style" My definition of fast is pretty fast man, I hope you know what your asking for. :) I'm doing a few Christmas tunes, but I may have to slip this in.. maybe even by the weekend! thanks for asking crawdaddy-0! I'm looking forward to hearing el Tee's ice pick on turn the page..

Cranky One - ha!! I'm heading for your tune immediately!

erichenryus - cool! check crawdads reply.. people don't normally give me requests, and I'm sure it will be a dissapoinment, but it will be fun.. thanks d00d!

nice stuff.........i really do like the cello patch.......doesn't sound exactly like a cello, but it's effective and that's all that counts..........

i like the effect on the vocal as well.......again, it's effective

i love the piano part!

very distinctive....nice guitar sounds...............good song, i enjoyed it

how do you do drums?? midi? recorded? loops?........they sound good

Ya Man!
I totally dig the vocals, great voice Sam!

I was one of the first to reply, between my computer problems and the site, well you know!

I really dig the lead guitar sound, doubled?
Fantastic sound!
The rhythm gits were Huge!
(And you know I love that E-bow!)

The only thing I think needs improvement is,it's too short.
Left me wanting more!

Great stuff,I really enjoyed it,thanks.

Pete

BTW-In my first post,I gave you 5 stars just for the title.

Headbag, that really cracks me up,makes me think of the latest product for the new millinium.

Having a bad hair day,no problem.
Just put on a Headbag, nobody will know the differance!

Feel uncomfortable in crowds, just put a Headbag on and you'll be good as new!

And how about the Unknown Comic, now there's a guy that knew how to use a Headbag!

(Sorry, guess I just watched too much Saturday Night growing up,it ruined me.!):p

huh, Pete...

...and I thought it was about some Mafioso dragging a duffelbag full of heads around town :D

You might be right!
That's a secret know only to the great Mistro himself!:D

Very cool sounding song! I really like the guitar work and the vocals stand out which is a good thing! And the piano outro was a nice touch!

I can't think of any negatives...the mix sounded good over here...well, the snare sounded a little bit too loud, but that is just nitpicking! :)

Nice job all around!

powderfinger - I play drum pads hooked into a Roland TD-8.. I dont record midi, just audio.. the worst part about it is I cant fix it later, so I have to nail a good drum take.. It's a good thing I learned how to use the Auto-punch feature on my recorder.. There were probably 12 different drum punches.. I am really struggling to get a good drum sound.. thanks for the comment man..

muzeman - you gave headbag a whole new meaning bro! :D Yeah I doubled the lead line.. One track had a Wah in the heel back position, and the other was straight distortion delay compression, and BBe Sonic Maximizer.. I only used the BBE on 1 of the leads.. Not sure if it made a huge difference, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.. No EBow this time though.. I just had some good sustain happening.. I find playing the guitar LOUD through my stereo speakers, gives it an almost amp type feedback, and definitely makes a difference.. I play right in front of my speakers at a loud volume.. I guess you just can pin down one solid meaning for headbag! :D thanks Pete!

boydrj - you may have a point about the snare being a bit loud.. there are several problems with this thing... I finally got a new mic so I think it helps a little.. appreciate you always checkin in man..

thanks for all the feedback fellas! very helpful as always..

This thread can be nuked now.. I did some Christmas music and I dont want to hog the clinic anymore than I already do..

thanks! :D

Hey - Real good song, man. I definitely hear a strong Sabbath, Ozzy influence in there..(which is a good thing)

NOTES:

I am not fucking anal about musical production, so everything on that front sounded a-okay to me...
The only thing keeping this from being an outstanding composition is the vocs and lyrics....
Now they are not terrible by any means..and I am sure if you had access to a million studio and a award winning production team, you could make them sound better...
The intro sounded a bit like Perry Mason on Q-Ludes... LOL
and outro was really nice and fit well. Again OZZYLIKE i.e. No More Tears.. and the haunting keyboards sounds...(Damn maybe this is Ozzy)

Anyway, maybe the best comment I can give you is this; if you submitted just the music to the Man himself; then he could make another classic out of it with his lyrics and singing.....

Influence is good and every musician has it....but I think maybe you're a tad bit too close to your roots on this. I know that sounds to over critical..and my bad cus it really is a great piece of music you put together, but if you ever wanted to make it big in the world of music, then I think you need to mutate this into a SAMILIKE hit and then you would really have something...

P.S. You can tell how much I liked it by checking your Nowhere.. stats.
