HD24 Ethernet, Please help

I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

I hooked up my new HD24 to a hub and to my PC. I put the HD24 in FTP server mode.

What do I need to do on my PC to see the files on the HD24? I have been searching everywhere and all I find is

"now you can use a browser like IE to access the files". Great. How?

Anyone willing to walk me through it? Thanks.

Click on "Control Panel"

Open up "Network Connections"

Right-click on "Local Area Connection" for the Ethernet port and choose
“Properties”

Make sure that "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" is there and checked, if not, click

Double-click on “Internet Protocol TCP/IP”

Choose “Use the following IP address”

Ensure your computers settings are:
IP Address - 192.168.001.101
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - 192.168.001.101

your FTP program, unless you have previously changed them in the HD24.
Now, put the HD24 into FTP Server Mode. Then, open your FTP program, type
in the HD24’s IP address(192.168.1.100), ensure the user name and password are
"anonymous", and your connected

Knowing the IP Address of the HD24 is important, and the username and password, but just changing the LAN IP Addresses would b'gger up my Broadband connection! so you may need to create another Connection.

Ethernet never worked for me though, it kept closing the connection and is beyond slow. So I recommend the Fireport, or the look at the 3rd party software HD24Tools for reading from the disk.

Thanks, I'm not using an FTP programp per se, but I finally found that I need to type in FTP:// then the IP in my URL bar.

Now I get a message that the log in failed. I'm wondering if the guy I bought it from has a password stored in there i need to get.

Well, I found a solution. I downloaded FTPsurfer and transfer the files that way.

I know it costs a little money, but I highly suggest getting the Fireport to go with your HD24. It is a different world. Once I got mine, I never went back to the ethernet.

That is your best bet. There are issues with internet explorer and the HD24 per Alesis. You will be fine with ftp surfer. Have you thought of a fireport? FTP is ungodly slow.

I think I was in fact having some issues with IE and the HD24. I will probably have to get the fireport; I record live shows, so I'll be transferring 3-4 hour shows multiplied by about 10 tracks. That will take a while...

Leddy, I do the same thing, record live gigs with my HD24. For my setup I use 3 focusrite octopre's, 24 channels right into the HD24. Then back at the studio I transfer each song into computer. I just record complete sets. Set 1, Set 2 etc. I dont worry about seperating the songs in a set. I do that when I transfer to computer. I go through Motu 2408 MK3. Works well.

Jim, just wondering how you get your signals from your recording frontend into your mixer for live gigs, do you run line level TRS cables from the HD24 to the mixer? or connect your Focusrite gear to the mixer? or some other method

I dont deal with a mixer at all. Had too many bad experiences with FOH engineers having crappy signal flow. I use a 24 channel splitter snake, half goes to bands mixer, half goes to me. Nice clean signal to 24 channels of preamps. I can then add mic to whatever I feel is needed and not worry about FOH guys needs. For a couple of years I would experiment with just taping off the console of the bands trs in to my HD24. Very bad results when sound enginer had bad eq. and bad overkill compression and too hot a signal.

That certainly makes things a whole lot simpler! As I'm in control of the recording side and the FOH/monitors I was thinking of a way of linking the two sides up and trying to use as little cable/few connections as possible, using lightpipe where available etc... so for me going SaffirePro > HD24 via lightpipe and HD24 analogue outs to the mixer might be simpler, but that will use unnecessary A/D D/A conversions. Or maybe create stage mixes on a laptop connected to the SaffirePro and not use the analogue mixer at all ). But the split looks the cleanest method.

I also record live gigs. And I do the FOH mix. I had my Midas Venice 320 direct outs modified to be pre-fader, pre-EQ, post-insert. I never run red, so the signal from the board is more than adequate recording in 24bit.

I run the direct outs from the board into the HD24. The post-insert lets me use the gates/comps I have on the drums for a good clean signal.

Transfer to a PC via firewire, delete tracks without input, and and mix with N-Tracks. It completely takes the 'room' out of the mix.

Yep, that is alos a great way. As long as its pre eq, amp, and fx thats as good as a splitter. The problem I have run into is sound guys that cant run proper gain structure, clip signals or over compress and eq. You get shit signal that is very hard to deal with.
