Congrats on the Eagle Scout.

Another congrats here!

From one fellow eagle scout (me-1992) to you, it's great to see that folks are still participating in scouts and following through on it all the way. gives me good hopes for when my son (6 months old) gets older.

i got my driver's license as my "reward" for making Eagle--of course, no car was included in that. it was a deal i'd made with my dad at age 13. i think you got a much sweeter deal. :D

cheers,

Yeah, the program seems to be ever growing. I hope to register as an adult leader sometime. As for the reward, it's kind of a graduation present in conjunction. I dropped out of high school, but just finished my g.e.d. tests. Still, I know it's a really sweet deal.

Yes, congrats on Eagle, innobidova! I only made it to Star scout. I was too busy playing music. : )

Why the "red line"?

There are pairs - even new - of 414's on Ebay for $1400 and under.

The pair of 414's would be a solid start, but possibly not at the expense of not allowing you to have some other mics and toys to use and play around with. I mean, there's no sense in having great mics if you have nothing to record with them. And if you really wanna play bass, too, don't rob yourself of that.

But if you could get into a pair of 414's for closer to $1400 - and you can even find the older B-ULS models for $500 [ making a pair of 414's only cost around $1K ] then you might not even have to decide between what's on either side of that red line.

Also, why invest $400 in 4041's when you could put that $400 towards some 414's in the $1K - $1400 range.

First of all - a scout is also "thrifty"!! So, there's no sense in spending $2200 for a pair of 414's - when, if you're "thrifty" and "wise" you can get into a pair of 414's for a fraction of that.

So, you started out with $2200 to play with. Here's how I'd recommend you look spend that moola.

2 X 414's $1K - $1200 - being thrifty
Jazz Bass - $450
Bass amp - $400
Bass cabinet - $200

If you did that right - and got a pair of 414 [perhaps B-ULS] for $1K, the total on all that would be $2050. Even leaving room for some more toys.

There are, of course, some other options. Maybe you don't need to really spend $600 on an amp/cab rig.

Now there is no red line. I think with a $2200 budget that you could - by being thrifty - figure out a way to get ALL the gear you want. : )

hey, a boy scout thread... i'm an eagle scout and also a scoutmaster now. it's a great program for some kids.

i don't know what you have for pre's, but you might want to trade one mic for a high end pre.

i got forced to go to boy scouts if i wanted to take guitar lessons. it was the most torturous thing ever done to me. boy scouts ended up being incredibly creepy and uncomfortably forced religious beliefs on me, and my guitar teacher ended up being incredibly creepy and uncomfortably forced religious beliefs on me. it was a fucking lose lose situation but i wasn't allowed to quit until i was like 16 when i bought my own car and just stopped going.

after i turned 18 and graduated, i was an Assistant Scoutmaster in the troop......but i haven't been very active since i left for college.

now that i've got a son, though, i'll be looking to get active again once he's "of age". he'll make a cute tiger cub. :D

while it's certainly not for everyone in the first place.....i've found that the composition of the troop really makes (or breaks) the situation. we had a very loose organization--with kids of all religious backgrounds, and the emphasis was on camping and hiking and such.....not on discipline or cramming religion or beliefs down someone's throat. in our case, the boys ran the troop--the adults were there for guidance and to make sure no one got hurt too badly. :D

however, there were other troops in the area that were just like what you described. ours just wasn't, and it flourished as a result--the others foundered or had kids that resented the whole program. we did have kids for whom it "just wasn't their bag", or were "forced to go" and eventually quit, and that's cool too (well, not the 'forced' part, but you know what i mean). ;)

regardless, every time i hear about someone who had a negative scouting experience, i have to wonder what it would've been like if they'd been in a troop better suited to them.

Just a Presonus Firepod. If I looked into additional pres, it wouldn't be for a while.

You have a really good point... More to think about!

Okay, since I'm trying not to be so hung up on getting a brand new pair, I've looked into the older models. It looks like the B-ULS is the most popular. There is a B-ULS matched pair on the bay with a $1300 BIN and no starting bid. Is that reasonable? I think it's a little too much, but I'm very interested. There's no "make offer" button, but I'm thinking about contacting the seller and making an offer anyway. Would $1100 be fair?

If they're *really* a matched pair, that might be a fair price. If they are just C414B-ULS in *perfect condition, with the shock mounts and the flight case, I wouldn't pay more than $650 apiece new, or $550 apiece used.-Richie

I'm amused at how the auction ended right after I said it was on ebay. I didn't think I'd have to be discrete about it, but oh well. If the ebay user phaley3n4u is reading this, congratulations.
