I want a neck with no inlays, no holes drilled, no nut, unlaquered, etc. Carvin doesn't sell them unless you can special order necks which I don't remember seeing. It is worth contacting them though if I don't get this other neck. I haven't found many places where there is an affodable neck like what I am looking for.

Have you checked out Allparts or WD ? Both offer good quality necks. I lean more towards WD. I don't know anyone who offer them without fret markers, though. :(

Ron can definitely hook you up with the no dot or inlayed fretboard.

I have never priced his necks but in 91 or so I got a custom built 24 fret 4 string with EMG P/U and electronics, ebony fretboard, maple neck with the graphite rods along side the truss rod for under $900.

He does everything from scratch wood wise.

Stew Mac I believe had Fender replacement necks fairly cheap and Warmoth has a clearance bin with half priced stuff (still pricey).

Are you doing the bass also?

I love the body design and wood on that one as well.

I bought the Melvyn Hiscock guitar building book. I am going to build my own neck from scratch. I bought a nice ebony fretboard with two inlaid chinese dragons facing each other and breathing fire. I have to find an inlay piece for the head of the neck.
I will try and get some pictures as I go along, I dont have a digital camera.
Nothing I have bought has arrived yet except the book, maybe that is a good thing.
This whole thing has been making me toy with the idea of buying my own CNC machining center, I know how to program and run em and I am getting awful tired of cutting metal.

Very cool, DW! CNC is the key to Carvin's success.

Besides, Maple smells better than Tapmatic!

here is the actual body. should I put a nice mirror polished engraved brass pickguard on her? Or should I go with something minimal to show the wood? I can make whatever I want out of whatever I want.

I see you are sporting a nice wood there D-Works..

I would go minimalist and show as much wood / grain as possible IMO...

the gold bigsby arrived today, oohoohohohohhhhoooohhhohohoh, the fretboard is due tomorrow, the body sometime early next week. Will pick out the wood for the neck after the body arrives so I can see the body and pick the neck color then. I think I will run me one of them stripes down the neck.

the body finally arrived, shes a beaut. Now I have to order the wood for the neck and try and build my first neck, wish me luck. :)

ordered the wood for the neck. Two pieces of honduran mahogony and one piece of good ole american ash. ;)
I am going to have to shave the sides of that fretboard I bought, it is about eighty thousandths of an inch to wide.

Cool! Can't wait!
Sorry but you are going to have to. This is turning out to be a long drawn out process, but a good learning expierience.

Wood has arrived for the neck. I was going to do alot of it by hand but; since I am a machinist and have access to CNC machining centers I have decided to draw up the neck, program it and cut it on the machine. I am a lazy bastard.
I have most of the drawing done and have to start the programming.
First things first, I have to glue the neck pieces together.

What is the best wood glue out there in the good ole USA?

gluing the five pieces together today. Using Titebond III ultimate waterproof woodglue. I bought some tuning pegs off ebay, should be here in a couple of days. :)

Hi,
I'm morphing a 74 tele into a baritone and adding a bigsby and roller bridge and nut.
I had a hell of a time finding a bridgeplate for it without buying the bigby bridge. If you are having the same probelm let me know. I found several gold and then finally one of chrome for $15 new.
I am thinking of drilling 3 or 4 3/8 holes about 3/8 deep on the back of the head and epoxying in some brass pieces. Polish the end and let them show. I wonder if it would add enough sustain to make it worth while. I don't want to clamp one of those brass weight sustainers on it.
Good luck with your projects. I have Lace sensors on my strat plus but put a Seymore Duncan stack in the bridge position.
I love the sensors on the strat.

I use Titebond Liquid Hide glue. Nice & easy to work with.
